No. 1 Softball runs through Roanoke to begin spring trip

SALEM, Va. – The top-ranked Salisbury University softball team swept through the Roanoke Maroons on Tuesday to begin its three-day spring trip. The Sea Gulls collected a 6-1 win in the opener before erasing an early deficit with a 5-3 victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • After Lindsey Windsor got on through a base on balls and stole second, Lauren Meyers knocked her in with an RBI single to get the Sea Gulls on the board in the first inning.
  • Abby Mace pushed SU's lead up to 3-0 in the top of the second inning with a two-run infield single that scored Jillian Dawson and McKenna Horner.
  • Roanoke broke through the run column in the sixth inning on a flyout to right field that allowed Lily Burns to score all the way from second base.
  • Windsor gave SU insurance in a big way in the top of the seventh inning with a three-run blast over the left-center field fence that extended the lead to 6-1.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 1
  • Abby Mace got on base three times with a pair of hits and a walk. She also drove in a pair of runs in the second inning on a two-RBI single.
  • Lindsey Windsor (W, 5-0) hit her second home run of the season with her seventh-inning three-run dinger. She also earned her fifth win of the season with four strikeouts. Windsor allowed seven hits, two walks and a run.
  • Nicole Ortega pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a three-up, three-down.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Serenity Bishop put Roanoke on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single to score Meri Bostic.
  • Maddison Lednum and Lauren Meyers hit back-to-back RBIs to give SU the one-run lead in the third inning. Lednum hit an infield single to score Natalie Paoli. Meyers followed with an RBI groundout to plate Abby Mace.
  • Bishop knocked in her second RBI of the game in the bottom half of the third to tie the game at two.
  • Mace brought home two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to right to score Jillian Dawson and Madi Lemon.
  • Roanoke cut the lead in half, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Kate Houte.
  • Paoli pushed SU's lead back up to two, 5-3, in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI infield single to score Sam Flowers.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 2
  • Natalie Paoli collected a career-best four hits in the nightcap. She also stole two bases, drove in and scored a run.
  • Abby Mace went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Sam Flowers also went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the win.
  • Madison Taylor (W, 4-0) pitched four innings of relief for Savannah Sheats. Taylor only allowed two hits, three walks and a run with a strikeout. Sheats sat down two batters on strikes om three innings.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury looks to win the season series against the 16th-ranked Lynchburg Hornets tomorrow.
  • The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
