FREDERICKSBURG. Va. – The top-ranked Salisbury University softball team dodged rain drops but it didn't slow down its momentum as the Sea Gulls swept a doubleheader from Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference rival, Mary Washington, on Saturday.
Lindsey Windsor pitched a two-hit shutout and drove in two runs to lead the Sea Gulls over the Eagles, 3-0, in the opener. The bats came alive in the fifth inning in the finale with a 10-1 win in five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
- After a scoreless two innings, Salisbury got on the board in the third inning. Natalie Paoli hit a one-out double which led to an RBI by Lindsey Windsor.
- Salisbury added two runs in the fifth inning. Abby Mace scored Sam Flowers on a sacrifice bunt. A batter later, Windsor scored Paoli again on an RBI infield single.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 1
- Natalie Paoli went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double.
- Abby Mace, Sam Flowers and Lindsey Windsor also tallied a hit for the Sea Gulls. Windsor drove in two runs while Mace added an RBI.
- In the circle, Windsor effectively shut down the Eagle bats. She allowed two hits in the first inning then closed out the game with 19 straight outs. She struck out nine in her eighth win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
- Abby Mace drove in three in the second inning to begin the scoring. With the bases loaded, Mace smacked a double to clear the bases.
- Mary Washington got a run back in the bottom half of the second with an Erica Shoop RBI groundout to trim the SU lead to 3-1.
- Salisbury pushed the lead back to three in the third inning with an RBI single by Madi Lemon with the bases loaded.
- The Sea Gulls enacted the run rule with a six-run fifth inning. Lauren Meyers got the scoring going in the inning when came around on an error by the Mary Washington third baseman. A double steal was successful later in the inning when Sam Flowers stole home. Lemon followed with an RBI double to score Emily Stockman. Two batters later, Mace roped a triple down the right-field line to score Lemon and Jillan Dawson to stretch the lead to 10-1.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 2
- Abby Mace matched season-bests in hits and RBIs with a 3-for-5 day with five runs batted in. Mace hit a double and a triple in the victory.
- Lindsey Windsor, Madi Lemon and Lauren Meyers each went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Lemon knocked in a pair of runs.
- Savannah Sheats (W, 6-0) also only allowed two hits in her start. She only allowed a run and three walks.
- Nicole Ortega pitched the fifth inning and sat down the side in order with two strikeouts.
UP NEXT
- Salisbury will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12 against the Stevenson Mustangs.
- The doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. in Owings Mills, Md.
