No. 1 Softball tames Stevenson in doubleheader

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – After a week-plus off, the top-ranked Salisbury University softball team collected a doubleheader sweep over the Stevenson Mustangs. A pitcher's duel went in Salisbury's favor with a 3-1 win in Game 1 over Stevenson. The bats came alive in Game 2 for the Sea Gulls as the team picked up a 13-2 win in five innings in the nightcap over the Mustangs.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Stevenson loaded the bases in the first inning. But, Savannah Sheats induced a groundout to end the threat with nothing across.
  • After a scoreless first three innings, Lindsey Windsor led off the fourth inning with a triple to center field. A batter later, Carrie Jacoby brought Windsor home on a groundout to get the first run of the game across.
  • Salisbury doubled its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles by Natalie Paoli and Windsor.
  • The Mustangs scratched a run across in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Megan Hamp that scored McKenzie Tobler.
  • Salisbury quickly got the run back and pushed the lead back to two when Lauren Meyers doubled to lead off the sixth followed by an RBI single by Maddison Lednum to plate McKenna Horner.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 1
  • Lindsey Windsor paced the offense with a 3-for-4 day with a run and an RBI. She also collected a double and a triple at the plate. Windsor also pitched a scoreless seventh to earn her third save of the season.
  • Natalie Paoli and Maddison Lednum each collected a pair of hits.
  • Savannah Sheats (W) pitched great in her start to pick up her seventh win of the season. Sheats scattered five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Abby Mace started the game with a bang with a leadoff home run over the right-field wall. Two batters later, Lindsey Windsor cracked a two-run blast over the left-field wall. Later in the inning, an RBI sacrifice fly by Carrie Jacoby and an RBI single by Sam Flowers extended Salisbury's lead to 5-0 in the first.
  • Stevenson plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first on a two-run double by Megan Hamp.
  • The offense continued to roll with six runs in the top of the second inning. Back-to-back RBI singles by Natalie Paoli and Windsor followed by a successful double steal by Paoli and Windsor pushed Salisbury's lead to 8-2.
  • An RBI single by Maddison Lednum followed by Lexie Delcollo scoring off a Stevenson error added to the SU lead. The second inning was capped off by a two-RBI single by Meghan Reed to extend the lead to 12-2.
  • Windsor roped an RBI triple to left field and later scored a wild pitch to put Salisbury ahead 13-2 in the third inning.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 2
  • Lindsey Windsor was a double away from the cycle. She was 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three runs scored. Windsor totaled six hits in eight at-bats during the doubleheader with two triples, a home run and a double.
  • Meghan Reed, Natalie Paoli, Abby Mace and Maddison Lednum all had two hits in the victory. Mace hit her fifth home run of the season with her leadoff bomb in the first.
  • Madison Taylor, Isabella Purdy and Nicole Ortega all saw time in the circle during the run-rule. Purdy earned her second win of the season with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will return to the friendly confines of Sea Gull Softball Stadium on Friday, April 14 to take on the Cabrini Cavaliers.
  • The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Salisbury.
