No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse holds off No. 4 TCNJ, 11-9

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team held off a late comeback by the fourth-ranked TCNJ Lions to secure an 11-9 win on Saturday. The win is Salisbury's sixth ranked win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury got on the board first with a man-up goal from Miranda Mears at the 11:58 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls dominated possession in the quarter and tacked on three more goals in the period to head into the second quarter with a 4-0 lead.
  • TCNJ got one back at the start of the second with a goal from Jillian Westerby less than three minutes into the quarter.
  • Salisbury's offense exploded for five more goals in the period, including three scores from Emma Skoglund to allow SU to head into halftime with a 9-1 lead.
  • Both teams traded two goals each to start the third quarter and make it 11-3 with 4:21 left in the third quarter.
  • Ally Tobler notched a goal for the Lions in the closing minute of the third to make it 11-4 heading into the final quarter.
  • After some back-and-forth for possession to start the fourth, TCNJ added four unanswered goals to cut into the lead and make it 11-9 with 2:30 remaining.
  • TCNJ threatened again in the final minutes, but Kaitlyn Hunsinger came up with a big save and the Sea Gulls were able to run out the clock and give the game its final score of 11-9.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Emma Skoglund notched a career-high nine points on five goals and four assists. Skoglund now sits fifth all-time in career goals with 161 and ninth all-time in career points with 210.
  • Mary Hanzsche added four points on three assists and a goal.
  • Seven different Sea Gulls notched a goal in the contest.
  • Kaitlyn Hunsinger earned the win in the cage and tallied 10 saves while allowing nine goals.
TCNJ GAME NOTES
  • Jillian Westerby scored three goals.
  • Wayden Ay scored two goals and tallied an assist.
  • Anna Wright scored two goals.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will conclude the regular season on the road on Saturday, April 29 when they take on Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference rival, CNU.
  • The opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Newport News, Va.
