NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Salisbury University senior attacker
Erin Scannell notched the game-winning goal in overtime to vault the fourth-ranked Sea Gulls over the CNU Captains, 12-11 on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Sea Gulls conclude the regular season with a 12-3 record and a 2-0 mark in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CNU struck first at the 10:40 mark of the first quarter with a goal from Lindsay Connell.
- Salisbury answered with two goals from Leah Vilov and Emma Skoglund to take a 2-1 lead with 2:15 left in the first.
- Brookelyn Morrison found the back of the net in the closing seconds of the quarter to knot the game at two.
- Erin Scannell notched a goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead for the Sea Gulls.
- A quick 2-0 run on back-to-back possessions gave the Captains a 4-3 lead with 9:09 left in the half.
- After a turnover by CNU, Vilov found some open space and notched a man-down goal to tie the game at 4-4 with five minutes left on the clock.
- Both teams exchanged a goal in the waning moments of the quarter to send the teams into halftime with the score tied at 5-5.
- CNU opened the second half with a 3-0 run to take an 8-5 lead with 9:17 left in the third quarter.
- Salisbury responded with a 3-0 run of its own, with a goal from Vilov and two from Meridith Price to tie the game once again at 8-8 with 3:18 on the clock.
- Kelsey Winters scored a goal for the Captains' in the last two minutes of the quarter to take a 9-8 lead into the final period.
- Alexandra Parker tied the game up with a goal on the Sea Gulls' opening possession of the fourth quarter. Parker's goal sparked a 3-0 run for Salisbury to take an 11-9 lead with 9:02 left in regulation.
- CNU used two goals in the final minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 11-11 and send the teams into overtime.
- After a scoreless opening half of overtime, Price won the draw control that gave SU possession. After the team passed the ball around, Scannell found open room in front of the net and ripped a shot into the top-right corner to secure the overtime victory for the Sea Gulls.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Erin Scannell led the Sea Gulls with four points on three goals and an assist.
- Leah Vilov notched a hat trick. She also added three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
- Meridith Price chipped in two goals. She also picked up six draw controls and caused a turnover.
- Mary Hanzsche dished out two assists.
- Natalie Held collected six draw controls and caused two turnovers.
- Kaitlyn Hunsinger earned the win in the cage and tallied six saves.
CNU GAME NOTES
- Kelsey Winters led the Captains with three points on two goals and an assist.
- Five different Captains tallied two points.
- Taylor Schoolar tallied 10 saves in the cage.
UP NEXT
- With the win, Salisbury earns the top seed in next week's C2C Tournament.
- Salisbury will host the fourth-seeded Warren Wilson Owls on Wednesday, May 3.
- Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
