FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team used a dominating offensive performance from
Cross Ferrara and
Luke Nestor to collect a 23-10 win at Mary Washington on Saturday. The Sea Gulls close out the regular season with a 16-1 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in the Coastal Lacrosse Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salisbury jumped out to an early two-goal lead behind goals by Cross Ferrara and Jack Dowd before Mary Washington gained the 3-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter with a 3-0 run.
- The Sea Gull offense came alive to start the second quarter with a three-goal run in the first four minutes of the second quarter, highlighted by a Josh Sanchez goal.
- After a Jackson Popeck goal for UMW, Salisbury poured on seven-straight goals to close out the first half to take a commanding 12-4 lead. During the run, Luke Nestor netted a trio of goals while Ferrara and Riley Strub put away a pair of goals apiece.
- The Sea Gulls continued the momentum into the start of the second half with a Ferrara score to extend the lead to nine, 13-4.
- The teams traded goals in the early goings of the third quarter before the Sea Gull offense responded with a four-goal run that started with a goal from Dowd and ended with the fourth goal of the day from Nestor to make it an 18-6 game.
- The Eagles ended the third with a two-goal run to cut the Sea Gulls lead to 10. 18-8, at the end of the quarter.
- The Sea Gulls opened the fourth with Ferrara's sixth goal of the day.
- After a Mary Washington goal, the Sea Gulls added four more goals. The run was led by two Blake Epstein goals with Joey Halloran and Lucas Ingley adding the other goals.
- The Eagles added a goal with just over a minute remaining from J.D. Nozemack to put the final score at 23-10.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Cross Ferrara led the Sea Gull offense with seven points on six goals and an assist. Ferrara is now 12 points shy of tying Jason Coffman's points record (451) for most points in program history.
- Luke Nestor added five points on four goals and an assist.
- Brice Bromwell, Jack Dowd and Blake Epstein finished with three points each. Bromwell scored a hat trick while Epstein and Dowd tallied two goals and dished out an assist each.
- The Sea Gulls finished 24-of-37 in faceoffs. Blake Malamphy dominated at the faceoff X going 19-of-27 with a game-high 13 ground balls. Ham McPartland added in five faceoff wins.
- John DeFazio led the Sea Gull defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
- Nicholas Ransom earned the win in net and recorded eight saves. Matty Back and Jack Twomey saw time in net for the Sea Gulls.
MARY WASHINGTON GAME NOTES
- J.D Nozemack led the Eagle offense with a hat trick and an assist.
- Garrett Keogh and Dave Votapek each added two points.
- Catholic went 13-of-37 in faceoffs. Jacob Fowler finished 9-of-24 at the X with six ground balls.
- Keegan Shipe led the Eagle defense with two caused turnovers, three ground balls and tallied a goal.
- Riley Green started in net for the Eagles and recorded nine saves. Wyatt Martin and David Pritchard each earned time in net for Eagles.
UP NEXT
- As the top seed, Salisbury will host the semifinal and finals of the CLC Championship Tournament.
- The Sea Gulls will host either Montclair St. or the fifth-seeded team on Friday, May 5.
- Opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
