Ortega, Sheats pitch one-hitter to clinch second C2C title over No. 7 CNU, 1-0

SALISBURY, Md. – The storyline of the weekend was phenomenal pitching and timely hitting and both played a major factor in the winner-take-all game in the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Softball Championships with the top-ranked Salisbury University softball team outlasted the seventh-ranked CNU Captains, 1-0, behind a combined one-hitter by Nicole Ortega and Savannah Sheats.

The win improves the Sea Gulls' record to 39-3 overall as the team will likely enter the NCAA Tournament. It is SU's 21st conference championship in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took until the third inning to break the scoreless tie. With two outs, Lindsey Windsor reached first after a bobble by the CNU pitcher. A batter later with CNU playing the overshift, Carrie Jacoby ripped a triple to right to score Windsor from first base.
  • Nicole Ortega was dealing up until the sixth inning when the Captains loaded the bases. Savannah Sheats relieved Ortega and forced Meredith Brickner to ground out to keep the Captains off the board.
  • CNU finally got a hit across with a bloop single to shallow left field but Sheats got the next two batters out, including a strikeout looking to clinch the conference crown.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Nicole Ortega (W) had a no-hitter going until two outs in the sixth inning where she was relieved by Savannah Sheats. Ortega was efficient again and forced a lot of weak contact by the potent CNU hitters. She scattered four walks and struck out one.
  • Carrie Jacoby paced the offense with a pair of hits, including the eventual game-winning RBI triple in the third.
  • Maddison Lednum and Natalie Paoli also recorded hits for the Sea Gulls.
