Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 2 Men’s Lacrosse fends off No. 9 W&L, 12-9, to reach Final Four

SALISBURY, Md.  – The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team used a strong defensive effort to defeat ninth-ranked Washington and Lee Generals, 12-9, in the NCAA Division III National Quarterfinals.
 
The Sea Gulls advanced to its 28th NCAA Semifinal with a 21-1 overall record.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals opened the game with a goal from Hillis Burns in the first four minutes of the game.
  • The Sea Gulls finished the first quarter with a three-goal run to take the 3-1 lead. Jude Brown found Isaac Thrasher to tie the game at one. The run continued with back-to-back unassisted goals by Brice Bromwell and Brown.
  • After Alex Brown scored to open the second quarter, Cross Ferrara scored two straight goals within 30 seconds of each other which gave Salisbury the 5-2 lead with 6:04 left in the first half.
  • W&L cut into the lead, 5-3, with five minutes left in the first with a Sam Mannino goal.
  • However, Salisbury ended the second quarter strong with a Luke Nestor tally with 24 ticks left in the first half to send the Sea Gulls to the locker room up 6-3.
  • The Sea Gulls opened the second half with another three-goal run to extend their lead to six, 9-3. Jack Dowd opened the run with back-to-back goals from Jude Brown followed by a Ferrara unassisted tally.
  • The Generals would not go away and answer with a three-goal run of their own, highlighted by a Burns goal to reduce the deficit to three, 9-6, with 3:59 in the third quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls once again scored a goal in the final minute of a quarter. This time, Dowd found the back of the net to push the Sea Gulls lead back to four, 10-6, entering the final quarter.
  • The Generals continued to fight back with two quick goals to start the fourth from Alex Brown and Joey Allen to make the score 10-8 with 11 minutes remaining.
  • The Sea Gulls added two more goals from Nestor and Ferrara to push the Sea Gulls lead to four, 12-8, with five minutes remaining in the game.
  • The Generals would add one more goal from Brown with three minutes remaining to put the final score at 12-9.

  • Hillis Burns led the General offense with two goals and two assists.
  • Alex Brown tallied a hat trick
  • Joey Allen added two goals.
  • The Generals went 6-of-24 in faceoffs. Matt Gallagher went 3-of-12 from the faceoff X with two ground balls. Will Bou added two faceoff wins.
  • Harris Hubbard led the Generals' defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • Warren Seeds started in net for the Generals and recorded 14 saves.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will face their rivals the fourth-ranked CNU Captains in the NCAA Semifinals on Sunday, May 21.
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Sea Gull Stadium.
