No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse wins third consecutive C2C Championship over CNU, 14-8

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked and top-seeded Salisbury University women's lacrosse team defeated the second-seeded Christopher Newport Captains, 14-8, to secure its third consecutive Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Championship on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mary Hanzsche was able to find a cutting Alexandra Parker on the Sea Gulls' first two possessions, and Parker deposited shots past the goalkeeper to give Salisbury an early 2-0 lead.
  • Both teams traded a pair of goals over the next few minutes of the quarter to make it 4-2 SU with 8:15 left in the first.
  • A 3-0 run from the Captains put them up 5-4 with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Riley Hartman closed out the high-scoring first with a goal to knot the game at 5-5 heading in the second.
  • Both defenses locked in for the first several minutes of the second quarter. Emma Skoglund broke the tie with a goal at the 8:11 mark to give Salisbury the 6-5 advantage.
  • Hope Hunter tied the game back up for CNU with 2:58 left in the half.
  • Erin Scannell and Caroline Knight rounded out the half with a goal each to give the Sea Gulls an 8-6 lead heading into halftime.
  • Salisbury used a 4-0 run in the third quarter, highlighted by two goals from Scannell and goals from Meridith Price and Leah Vilov, to extend its lead out to 12-6.
  • Julia Iapicca added a goal for the Captains at the start of the fourth.
  • The Sea Gulls answered with two goals from Knight and Scannell to make it 14-7 with just under four minutes remaining.
  • Hunter tallied another score for CNU in final seconds, but the lead was too much to overcome and Salisbury secured its third consecutive C2C Championship with a final score of 14-8.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Erin Scannell paced the offense with four goals on the day. She also caused two turnovers and collected a ground ball.
  • Caroline Knight recorded a hat trick.
  • Mary Hanzsche dealt out three assists.
  • Leah Vilov caused a career-high six turnovers and collected four ground balls. She also added in a goal on the offensive end.
  • Kaitlyn Hunsinger earned the win in the cage and tallied 10 saves.
CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT GAME NOTES
  • Brookelyn Morrison scored three goals to lead the Captains.
  • Kelsey Winters dished out three assists.
  • Haley Chadwick tallied six saves in goal.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will wait for a Pool B bid into the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA selection showed is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
