No. 1 Softball upset by Moravian to open NCAA Championships

MARSHALL, Texas – The top-ranked Salisbury University softball team stumbled in its NCAA Championship opener to the eighth-seeded Moravian Greyhounds, 4-1, on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury looked to get on the board in the opening inning of the game. Lindsey Windsor ripped a triple to the right-center field gap. A batter later, a wild pitch to the backstop took an unfortunate bounce for Windsor as she was caught in between third and home trying to score.
  • Moravian capitalized on the momentum with four runs in the top of the second inning. A two-run double by Madi Cunningham followed by a two-run triple by Holly Walter put the Greyhounds up 4-0 early.
  • The Sea Gulls threatened in the third inning with two runners in scoring position and one out. Cunningham got Abby Mace to pop-out and Windsor to line out to end the threat with no runs across.
  • The Greyhounds looked to add to their lead in the fifth inning with a wild pitch to the backstop but a great diving play by Emily Stockman to tag a stealing Emily Silberman to keep the deficit at four.
  • The Sea Gulls used that momentum to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning. A lead off single by Meghan Reed led to a bunt single by Mace. A wild pitch put runners in scoring position for Windsor. A great squeeze play by Windsor allowed McKenna Horner to score from third and put a run across. However, a double play got Moravian out of the inning.
  • In the sixth, Moravian loaded the bases with two outs. But, Nicole Ortega worked out of the jam with a Lindsey Gawrys fly-out.
  • Salisbury looked to get a rally started in the bottom of the seventh after a Madi Lemon double off the right-field wall. Mace sent a long fly ball to left field but it was caught at the base of the wall to allow Moravian to upset Salisbury.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Lindsey Windsor and Madi Lemon both went 2-for-3 in the game. Lemon knocked a double while Windsor tallied her fifth triple of the season and added an RBI.
  • Savannah Sheats (L) was only able to go 1.2 innings with four earned runs.
  • Nicole Ortega came in relief of Sheats and scattered five hits and three walks but didn't allow a run and struck out three.
MORAVIAN GAME NOTES
  • Madi Cunningham (W) led Moravian both at the plate and in the circle. Cunningham went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs. She also pitched a complete game and allowed only one run on eight hits and a strikeout.
  • Holly Walter also drove in two runs in the second inning.
