Lemon’s long ball lifts No. 1 Softball past No. 4 CNU, 3-1

MARSHALL, Texas – The top-seeded Salisbury University softball bounced back from yesterday's loss to take down its conference rival and defending national champions, No. 4 seed Christopher Newport, 3-1, in the elimination game at the NCAA Softball Championships.

With its 45th win, the Sea Gulls matched its program-record win total in a season with the 2003 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CNU looked to score first in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back bunts by Abby Rochette and Brooke Palmer-Scott put two runners on and one out. Lindsey Windsor buckled down and got Kensley Hess to strike out and Brooke Greaver to pop out to end the threat with no runs across.
  • Salisbury responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs. Madi Lemon launched the first home run of the NCAA Championships with a shot over the left-field fence. After a Windsor walk, Carrie Jacoby brought her home with a double to right field to put Salisbury up 2-0.
  • The Captains cut the Sea Gull lead in half in the fourth. Nicole Apai scored from third base on a passed ball.
  • However, Salisbury got the run back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lauren Meyers doubled to right field before Abby Mace brought her home with an RBI single to score Jillian Dawson and make the game 3-1.
  • Windsor retired the next six of the next seven batters to allow the Sea Gulls to advance in the tournament.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Madi Lemon hit the first home run by any team at the 2023 NCAA Championships. It was also Lemon's third homer of the year, the second off of CNU's Jamie Martin this season.
  • Carrie Jacoby and Lauren Meyers both hit doubles in the contest. Jacoby knocked in Windsor with her ninth double of the season.
  • Abby Mace collected the other hit of the game with an RBI single in the fifth.
  • Windsor (W) pitched a complete-game four-hitter with three strikeouts and a walk to earn her 16th win of the season.
CNU GAME NOTES
  • CNU was also held to four hits.
  • Brooke Greaver, Abby Rochette, Bailey Palmer-Scott and Nicole Apai each notched a hit for the Captains.
  • Jamie Martin (L) allowed three runs on four hits. She struck out three and walked two.
