SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team opened the 2023 campaign in the win column, toppling the William Peace Pacers by a 3-1 (25-7, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22) final on Friday evening at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sea Gulls coasted to victory in the first set of the new season. Salisbury rattled off 11 straight points to take a 13-2 lead before scoring 10 out of 12, capped by a Natalie Uibel service ace, to put a bow on the 25-7 win.
- William Peace found their pace in the second set as the teams traded blows. With the score knotted at 10-10, the Pacers claimed five of six to jump in front by four at 15-11.
- Facing an 18-15 deficit later in the set, the Sea Gulls rattled off five straight points to swing the pendulum of momentum back in their favor. Salisbury hung tough in a gritty ending to set two, getting a kill from Jackie Mitchell to put it away at 25-23.
- The Sea Gulls used a strike from Uibel and a pair of kills from Emma Quandt to take the first three points of the third set. William Peace stormed back three points later, rattling off eight straight to take a 10-4 lead.
- Trailing 14-10, SU nabbed five straight and went on to take a 21-17 lead. The Pacers claimed eight of the final nine, though, with a Landis Limon kill forcing a fourth set, 25-22.
- The foes seesawed on the scoreboard to open the fourth, splitting the first 10 points at a 5-5 score. A three-point swing later in the set, spurred by a kill and a service ace from Gwen Eustace, put Salisbury in front, 12-9.
- The Pacers hung on to retake the lead, 16-14, before Grace Rail handed WPU a pair of aces and Salisbury scored five consecutive points to go up 19-16.
- William Peace brought the contest back to a standoff at 19-19, but the Sea Gulls secured five of the next six points to get to match point and eventually rode a Mitchell kill to triumph 25-22 and claim their first match win of the season.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Jackie Mitchell opened the year with an impressive double-double, leading Salisbury in both kills (15) and digs (20) in the victory.
- Natalie Uibel also landed in double-double territory, finishing second on the squad with 11 kills while racking up 11 digs. Uibel added a pair of service aces on the night.
- Gwen Eustace had a wildly efficient evening, collecting 10 kills against no errors on just 12 total attacks for an .833 swing percentage. Eustace also led Salisbury with three blocks in the win.
- Emma Quandt finished with 10 kills and pairs of digs and block assists.
- Brooke Young dished out 30 assists against the Pacers while adding 13 digs for her own double-double. Julie Altieri notched 10 assists in her collegiate debut.
- Grace Rail collected 18 digs from the libero position while tacking on a team-best four aces.
- The Sea Gulls swung .250 for the match with six players notching .200-plus attack percentages on over 10 attempts.
WILLIAM PEACE GAME NOTES
- Hannah Collier and Kelsey Bierbauer led the Pacers in kills, collecting 11 and 10, respectively.
- Maegan Brylski tallied 17 assists and 14 digs while collecting a pair of service aces.
- Audrey Spindle picked up a team-high 18 assists and five digs in the match.
- Logan Moore led William Peace with 27 digs from the libero spot on the evening.
- The Pacers swung at a .160 clip on the day, including .304 and .310 in the third and fourth set, respectively.

- The Sea Gulls take on Drew and Stevenson in the second day of the 2023 Margie Knight Classic on Saturday.
- Drew and William Peace will square off at 10 a.m. to open the day, followed by Salisbury-Drew at 12 p.m., Stevenson-WPU at 2 p.m. and Salisbury-Stevenson at 4:30 p.m.
