NEW YORK CITY – The Salisbury University volleyball team rolled into the Big Apple and came away with its 10th straight victory, taking a bite out of the 22nd-ranked New York University Violets, 3-1 (25-22, 27-29, 25-23, 25-15), on Friday evening at the John A. Paulson Center.
Facing a 10-4 hole early in the first set, the Sea Gulls rallied for five in a row, riding a
Natalie Uibel service ace to get within 10-9. The teams jousted evenly from there, then with NYU up 18-17 SU grabbed four straight to go in front 21-18. The Violets steadied up and cut it to 23-22, but
Julie Altieri landed a kill and
Kayla Pedersen dealt an ace of her own to ice it, 25-22.
Salisbury faced another big deficit in the second set, falling behind 15-8, but stormed back on a 10-2 run to go up 18-17. From there it was a race to the finish with both sides fighting off set points. SU had a chance to win it with a 26-25 lead, while NYU couldn't finish it off at 25-24 or 27-26. The Violets eventually locked in, though, with a kill from Grace Nelson and a Sea Gull error to draw even in the match, 29-27.
SU used another early run, this one 9-1, to swing a 5-4 deficit into a 13-6 lead to open the third set. The Violets jumpstarted several rallies, getting within 17-15 and 21-20, but kills from Uibel and Altieri and another Uibel ace drove the Sea Gulls to set point at 24-20. NYU furiously clawed back with the next three, but Altieri set up
Jackie Mitchell for the final blow to cap the fixture 25-23.
The Sea Gulls burst out of the gate in the fourth set with six of the first seven points. NYU settled down and soon pulled within 9-8, but SU took the next four on three Violet errors and a Uibel ace to make it 13-8. Up 15-12 soon after, Salisbury found a new gear by scoring 10 of the final 13 points, leaving NYU in the dust for good on a block by Mitchell and
Gwen Eustace for an emphatic 25-15 match-clincher.
