No. 1 Field Hockey NCAA Second Round Preview vs. No. 14 Lynchburg

The Rundown

The No. 1 ranked Salisbury University field hockey team opens national tournament play in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 16. After earning a first-round bye, the Sea Gulls will do battle with No. 14 Lynchburg inside Sea Gull Stadium at 11 a.m. If the Sea Gulls are able to advance, they will face the winner of No. 10 York (Pa.) and No. 6 CNU on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a chance to head to the final four on the line.

  • Salisbury went 14-2 this season which included six ranked wins. Salisbury also outscored opponents 56-12 on the season. 
  • Head coach Dawn Chamberlin and her staff were named C2C Coaching Staff of the Year while sophomore Marli McDorman was named C2C Player of the Year.
  • Eight Sea Gulls were named to the All-C2C First Team.
  • SU earned the first round bye and hosting privileges' by taking down CNU in the C2C Conference Championship in a game that ended in a penalty stroke-off. 
  • The No. 13 Hornets return to the NCAA tournament for the second straight season and the 21st occasion in program history.
  • Sophomore Khanyisile Mzizi slotted in the game-winning golden goal in overtime and the University of Lynchburg field hockey team took down Susquehanna in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
  • Lynchburg field hockey team's successful season resulted in 10 Hornets earning All-ODAC Team honors. The Hornets squared up against Shenandoah in the ODAC championship title game and fell, 4-1.
  • Saturday will be the seventh all-time meeting between the Sea Gulls and the Hornets.
  • Lynchburg took the first ever meeting between the programs in 2001 but ever since it has been all Sea Gulls. Salisbury has won five in a row over Lynchburg with the latest in the 2021 NCAA tournament first round, where Salisbury took the contest in overtime, 3-2. 
The team is excited to have the opportunity to extend our season and play in the second round of the NCAA tournament.  This group has worked hard to get here and is fortunate to be one of the last 16 teams remaining. Anything goes at this point in the season, one loss and it’s all over. We must be sharp, execute our A-game, and compete at a high level to advance.
