Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Nick Lewis

Men’s Soccer sees season conclude in C2C semifinals to No. 1 UMW in PK's

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The fourth-seeded Salisbury University men's soccer team battled from start to finish against top-ranked and top-seeded Mary Washington on Friday afternoon, maintaining a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes, but the Eagles prevailed in penalty kicks, 5-4, to advance to Sunday's Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Championship match.

For the second time this season, the Sea Gulls (5-7-5) found the first score against the Eagles. The hero was Tanner Calzado, whose second goal of 2024 put Salisbury ahead in the 34th minute. Salisbury would outshoot UMW in the opening period, 6-5, earning two corner kicks to UMW's four.

The Eagles (16-1-2) turned the tides in the second half, forcing Clif Nehman to turn away five tries in the early minutes of the period. UMW broke through in the 68th minute with a build-up between Michael Lenhard and Carter Berg setting the table for a Sammy Amorose finish, knotting the match at 1-1.

The Sea Gull backline regained composure and Nehman made another seven saves, keeping the 1-1 draw intact through regulation and nearly all 20 overtime minutes. Gavin Miller forced an added time save from the opposing net-minder, but it was not enough to prevent the match from heading to a shootout.

After entering in the final seconds of overtime, Josh Wendel turned away a pair of Eagles attempts from the spot, but Division III's top-ranked team ultimately prevailed, 5-4.

GAME NOTES
  • Tanner Calzado fired his second career score while leading the team with two shots on goal.
  • Tristan Brannock fired two shots in the draw.
