No. 1 Men’s Lacrosse tames Grove City, 17-11

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team collected its 45th consecutive home victory on Saturday afternoon, a 17-11 triumph over Grove City in the 2024 home opener at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The reigning champions were firing on all cylinders early, rattling off three goals in the game's first five minutes. Jack Dowd connected with Brice Bromwell in an early man-up situation for the afternoon's first score, while Luke Nestor and Charlie White each picked up unassisted tallies in the run.
  • Grove City cashed in on a numbers advantage of their own less than a minute later, cutting the margin to 3-1 with 9:26 remaining in the period.
  • Salisbury penned a prompt rebuttal as Jude Brown fed Joe Carozza his first of three man-up goals on the day with just over seven minutes to play in the quarter. Dowd and Ty Keaton each scored before the stanza's conclusion, putting the Sea Gulls on top 6-1 through 15 minutes.
  • The Sea Gulls painted the second quarter maroon and gold, outscoring the Wolverines 6-0 in the frame. Bromwell linked up with Nestor less than two minutes in before Braden Glushakow blazed down the alley and fired past the Grove City keeper, extending the Salisbury advantage to seven.
  • Carozza netted his second and third man-up goals of the day across the next five minutes, cashing in finds from Brown and Keaton to push the Sea Gulls into double digits, 10-1, with just over four minutes to play in the half.
  • Dowd launched his second goal of the day in the final seconds, pushing the lead to 11-1 at the intermission.
  • Salisbury logged the first four goals of the third quarter, beginning with an unassisted finish from Nestor for his third goal of the contest. After six scoreless minutes, SU unleashed three goals in 79 seconds, including a Blake Epstein goal (assisted by Brown) and a pair of Riley Strub strikes (assisted by Dowd and Nestor) to lead 15-1 with under 20 minutes left in the affair.
  • The Wolverines found their second goal in the final 90 seconds of the third period to tighten the score, 15-2 heading into the final quarter.
  • Bromwell tallied his second goal to begin the frame before a four-goal run from Grove City tightened the gap, 16-6. The Wolverines responded to a Lucas Ingley goal with five scores in the closing seven minutes, but Salisbury held on to prevail, 17-11.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Jack Dowd and Luke Nestor led the squad in points in the contest. Dowd scored twice with a pair of dimes while Nestor finished with three goals and one assist, scooping a trio of ground balls as well.
  • Joe Carozza tied Nestor with three goals, all of which came in man-up opportunities. Dating back to the start of last season, Carozza ranks second among all Sea Gulls with eight man-up finishes.
  • Brice Bromwell logged three points on two goals and an assist while finishing third on the team with four ground balls.
  • Jude Brown notched trios of assists and ground balls on the afternoon.
  • Riley Strub added a pair of goals while picking up two ground balls and causing one turnover.
  • John DeFazio swarmed the Wolverines defensively, picking up seven ground balls while forcing five miscues.
  • Bryce Stevenson and Evan Huffman each caused two Grove City errors in the contest.
  • Blake Malamphy won 13 of his 19 attempts at the faceoff X while scooping nine ground balls. Jake McCarthy tallied three faceoff wins in relief.
  • Nicholas Ransom moved to 2-0 on the season, making nine saves and allowing just one goal across 42:24 in goal. Z.J. Shahin finished the game for Salisbury, playing the final 17:36 and making three saves.
  • The Sea Gulls earned their 45th consecutive victory at Sea Gull Stadium on Saturday. The team has not lost a home matchup since the 2019 season.
GROVE CITY GAME NOTES
  • Matt Blythe led the Wolverines with five points on three goals and two assists. Blythe added five ground balls in the effort.
  • Luke Jayne totaled three points on a goal and two assists.
  • Kobi Bui and Stewart McClain collected pairs of goals, while Zachary Hougan passed out two assists.
  • Colton Lehberg went 13-of-27 at the faceoff X, scooping eight ground balls and scoring in the contest.
  • Danny Stone went the distance in goal, logging 23 saves while allowing 17 goals in the losing decision.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls travel to Scranton, Pa. next weekend, battling the University of Scranton Royals on Saturday, Feb. 17.
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Weiss Field.
