PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team fell to the second-ranked William Smith Herons on Monday evening, dropping a 10-7 decision at the SpringFling tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After nearly six scoreless minutes to begin the contest, Erin Scannell found a cutting Leah Vilov who fired into the top shelf to snatch the game's first goal. The Herons responded just over two minutes later, knotting the contest at 1-1 with just under seven minutes left in the quarter.
  • The defenses took control until the waning moments of the stanza when Camryn Pepper connected with Miranda Mears to put Salisbury back in front, 2-1 with just 28 seconds to spare.
  • Each back line rose to the occasion, blanking the opposition across the first eight minutes of the second quarter. The Herons found a surge with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, rattling off consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead.
  • After being turned away for over four minutes, Salisbury yanked the matchup back into a tie as Grace Doyle buried a pass from Pepper with just over two minutes to go. The score held until William Smith took advantage of a man-up free-position opportunity, taking a 4-3 lead to the half.
  • The Herons added to their lead just 42 seconds into the third quarter, extending the lead to two at 5-3. William Smith added another just over three minutes later, pushing the margin to 6-3 with just under 11 minutes to go in the frame.
  • Salisbury roared back with a three-goal run, beginning when Caroline Knight cashed in a free-position goal three minutes later to slim the margin. The Sea Gull run continued throughout the quarter as goals from Julianna Ott and Doyle (assisted by Mary Hanzsche) brought the battle back to a deadlock, 6-6, heading to the final 15.
  • The Herons blitzed Salisbury to begin the final quarter, logging three consecutive goals to take a 9-6 advantage with just over nine minutes left in the contest.
  • Alexandra Parker punched in a free-position finish to cut the margin to two with just over three minutes to play, but a late Heron strike sealed the final score, 10-7.
