No. 4 Women’s Lacrosse prevails over Messiah, 15-4

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 on the road in 2024, collecting a 15-4 victory over the Messiah University Falcons on Wednesday evening in Grantham, Pa.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Erin Scannell lit the first match, scoring a free-position goal just under four minutes into the opening quarter to establish an early advantage, 1-0. Camryn Pepper connected with Lauren Hackett with just under nine minutes left in the frame to cushion the lead, 2-0.
  • Salisbury posted a two-goal outburst in the final 16 seconds of the stanza, using solo strikes from Caroline Knight and Grace Doyle to haul a 4-0 headstart into the second quarter.
  • Scannell scored her second after nearly five scoreless minutes to open the stanza, putting Salisbury up by five. Hackett struck again with the numbers advantage on her side two minutes later, extending the Salisbury lead to 6-0.
  • The Falcons got one back with 5:36 left in the first half, but the Sea Gulls parried with a pair of goals by Knight and Scannell, expanding the lead to 8-1. Messiah added another in the final two minutes, but Pepper sent a feed to Miranda Mears with just 53 seconds left to help Salisbury to a 9-2 halftime advantage.
  • Messiah tallied the first goal of the second period less than three minutes in, but the Sea Gulls penned a prompt response by way of Mary Hanzsche's first goal of the matchup, setting the score at 10-3. Pepper logged her third point with an unassisted goal that pushed the margin to eight, 11-3.
  • Meridith Price found Leah Vilov with a numbers advantage just over a minute later to add to the 12-3 lead that held for the remainder of the third quarter.
  • Messiah netted its fourth goal with just over 11 minutes left, reducing the margin to eight at 12-4. Salisbury posted three unanswered goals in the final eight minutes, beginning when Regan McDonnell found netting on a free-position shot. McDonnell struck again just under four minutes later, sending an Ally Mathis feed into the twine for the 10-goal advantage before Audrey Harrington set the final score with a solo strike in the final 93 seconds.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Camryn Pepper led the attack with four points on one goal and a trio of assists while also pitching in three ground balls and three caused turnovers in the win.
  • Erin Scannell corralled her third hat trick of the campaign while snatching a team-high five ground balls.
  • Lauren Hackett, Caroline Knight, and Regan McDonnell each posted pairs of goals.
  • Five other Sea Gulls scored on the evening.
  • Elizabeth Hesen forced three Falcon miscues while adding a pair of ground balls.
  • Grace Doyle corralled a team-high three draw controls.
  • Kaitlyn Hunsinger improved to 8-2 on the season, making four saves in the full 60 minutes.
MESSIAH GAME NOTES
  • Grace Pettit finished with two goals to lead the Falcon offense.
  • Hayley Lettinga and Annalise Keitel also scored on the evening. Lettinga also caused three Salisbury turnovers and secured two draw controls.
  • Emma Hagg brought down a game-high six draw controls while causing a trio of Sea Gull miscues.
  • Mackenzie O'Haver made 14 saves across the full 60 minutes and totaled a game-high six ground balls in the losing effort.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury returns home to host the York (Pa.) Spartans on Saturday, March 30 for the team's One Love and Youth Day game.
  • The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start from Sea Gull Stadium.
