SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team scored in all of its turns at-bat and cleared 20 runs for the third time this season, taking down the Wilson Phoenix, 20-2, in a weather-abbreviated seven-inning game on Monday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sea Gulls put up an unearned run in the first inning. Tim Petrucelli doubled to right with one out, then two batters later Danny Sheeler hit a grounder to first that was misplayed, allowing Petrucelli to score and put SU ahead 1-0.
- The Phoenix got that run back in the top of the second. Jordan McKenzie worked a leadoff walk, stole second, and came home on a two-out RBI single by Kodi Deskins to tie it at 1-1.
- In the home half of the second, Adam Tommer led off with a single and moved up to third on a groundout and a Dom Frigiola base hit. Andrew Kell then lifted a sac fly into right to plate Tommer and make it 2-1 SU.
- Salisbury preserved its lead with two straight plays at the plate in the top of the third. With men on second and third and two out, Jordan Daphney hit a sharp grounder to first that Sheeler pounced on and fired home to get Kade Linton out. On the first pitch to the next batter, Daphney got into a rundown between first and second to try and allow Haden Hoff to score from third, but Frigiola fired home from second and Zach Geesaman slapped on the tag for the third out.
- The Sea Gulls then broke out for a five-run bottom of the third. Dylan Winebrenner sparked the rally with a leadoff double, and after a walk and a sac bunt Geesaman tapped a grounder just in front of the plate for an infield hit to score Winebrenner. Tommer followed with a drag bunt up the first base line for a squeeze play to plate another, and Geesaman came home on an error at short to make it 5-1.
- Following a pitching change, Frigiola and Kell ripped back-to-back RBI doubles, pushing the SU margin up to 7-1.
- In the fourth, with two down and men on the corners, Geesaman snuck a run-scoring double inside the third base bag to make it 8-1.
- Wilson scratched one across in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Hoff to get it back to 8-2.
- The Sea Gulls countered with four in the home fifth. Kell doubled home the first two, then Petrucelli doubled in Kell and Sheeler singled in Petrucelli to make it 12-2.
- Geesaman's three-run homer to left capped an eight-run sixth for the Sea Gulls and made it 20-2.
- A lightning strike forced a delay of the game with a man on third and one out in the bottom of the seventh; after a short deliberation and consideration of the forecast, the teams agreed to call the game at that moment.
