No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse eludes St. Mary’s (Md.), 15-7

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team improved to 11-3 on the season, defending home field with a 15-7 victory over the Seahawks of St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday evening at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After conceding the first score of the evening, the Sea Gulls rattled off a six-goal run spanning nearly the entire first half. Mary Hanzsche dished a helper to a cutting Miranda Mears, who found the lower corner of the cage to tie the contest at 1-1 with just under five minutes played.
  • After nearly five scoreless minutes, Camryn Pepper brought the ball from X to the front door and went back the other way to give SU its first lead. Not quite four minutes later, Meridith Price dodged a pair of Seahawks and bounced a shot into the web, giving SU a 3-1 lead after the opening frame.
  • Hanzsche contributed on each of Salisbury's three goals in the second quarter, beginning when she wrapped around the crease and Leah Vilov hit her in stride to set up the finish three minutes into the stanza. She also dished assists to Alexandra Parker and Caroline Knight in the quarter, putting the Sea Gulls ahead 6-1 with 4:34 left in the half.
  • The Seahawks slipped their second goal between the pipes with seven seconds left in the half, setting the score at 6-2 through 30 minutes.
  • Erin Scannell and Mears needed just 47 seconds to add to their tally as the former hit the latter on the doorstep to return the lead to five. The duo struck again just over two minutes later, but that goal was sandwiched by two Seahawk strikes, bringing the line to 8-4 through five minutes of second-half play.
  • After nearly five defensive minutes, Hanzsche fed Scannell, who buried a shot in the top-right corner while falling away to soften the Seahawk damage, 9-4. Vilov found an unassisted finish to parry the third Seahawk goal of the frame, sending the game to the final 15 minutes with a 10-5 tally.
  • Salisbury stamped the fourth, outpacing the Seahawks 5-2 including the final three goals of the affair. Price and Scannell linked just 32 seconds into the quarter, while Alexandra Parker had a solo finish surrounded by a pair of St. Mary's goals. Knight and Audrey Harrington each connected in the final 6:08 of action before Grace Milliron sent a long dime to Abby Lantos who placed the cherry on top of the 15-7 final.
