FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team saw its leader,
Jim Nestor, earn his 400th win at the program's helm as the Sea Gulls earned a 19-9 victory over Mary Washington on Wednesday evening at Battleground Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sea Gulls needed just 103 seconds to strike first, with Mary Hanzsche aided Miranda Mears for the first score of the contest. The Eagles responded just under four minutes later, knotting the contest at 1-1 through five minutes and change.
- Salisbury needed just 19 seconds to pen their response. Camryn Pepper dished a helper to Leah Vilov to retake the lead, 2-1.
- A pair of Mary Washington scores swung the pendulum back once more, giving the hosts a 3-2 advantage. Hanzsche tallied a solo score before the Eagles notched their fourth goal with just 80 seconds left, sending Salisbury to the second quarter trailing 4-3.
- SU absorbed the early blow and delivered a punch of their own, outscoring UMW 8-1 in the second frame. Pepper led Hanzsche and Scannell to the cage for consecutive finishes before Vilov rattled off two goals (the second aided by Julianna Ott) in less than a minute, putting Salisbury ahead 7-4 with just under nine minutes left in the half.
- A Mary Washington goal broke the scoring streak a minute later, but the Sea Gulls started another one less than three minutes later. Meridith Price called her own number before Pepper crafted three more scoring trips, sandwiching an unassisted goal between assists to Vilov and Mears to set the halftime score at 11-5.
- Salisbury secured two more goals before the six-goal streak was ended, with Pepper scoring on her own before delivering a helper to Mears with 10:10 left in the third quarter. UMW brought the run to an end with just over 24 minutes left in the matchup, 13-6.
- Ott, Audrey Harrington, and Vilov all tallied solo strikes in the ensuing seven minutes before Harrington found Abby Lantos in the final minute of the stanza, giving SU a comfortable 17-6 lead heading to the final 15 minutes.
- The Sea Gulls took advantage of two Eagle yellow cards in the fourth. Alexandra Parker assisted Carly Hoffman on the first woman-up opportunity, while Regan McDonnell cashed in Salisbury's second goal with a numbers advantage of the quarter, 19-6.
- UMW scored three more in the final 6:03 of action, but that was all Salisbury allowed as they held on for the 19-9 final score.
