Winning streak reaches 21 for No. 1 Softball at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – The top-ranked Salisbury University softball team's winning streak hit blackjack with a pair of wins over the Shenandoah Hornets on Sunday afternoon at Rotary Field. The Sea Gulls cruised to a 14-5 five-inning win in game one before taking game two by a 5-3 margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
  • The Sea Gulls struck early and often, putting up three-plus runs in each of their first four turns at-bat. In the first inning, with runners on second and third and one out, Natalie Paoli brought in a run on a sac fly, then Carrie Jacoby belted a two-run homer to left to put Salisbury up 3-0.
  • Salisbury again put runners on second and third with no out in the second, and a single-plus error off the bat of Jillian Dawson brought home the inning's first run. Another came home on a pair of fielder's choices that failed to yield an out, followed by a Meghan Reed RBI groundout and a two-run single by Paoli to cap the five-run frame and make it 8-0.
  • The Hornets got three runs back in the home second on a Hannah Evans RBI double, Brenna Westwood RBI groundout, and Allison McQueeney run-scoring single to get it back to 8-3.
  • Salisbury responded in kind with another three-spot in the top of the third. With two on and two out, Reed brought one home on a single and Paoli plated two more on a double to get it back to 11-3.
  • After the Hornets scraped a run across in the home third, the Sea Gulls got three more in the top of the fourth on an Abby Mace RBI single and Emily Challender two-run double, both coming with two out, to make it 14-4.
  • McQueeney tagged a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 14-5, but the Sea Gulls maintained the nine-run lead through the end of the fifth and triggered the early victory.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Natalie Paoli registered five RBIs for the game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Carrie Jacoby went 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs.
  • Abby Mace, Emily Challender, and Meghan Reed combined to go 4-for-9 with five RBIs and eight runs scored from the top three positions in the batting order.
  • Jillian Dawson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs from the nine-hole.
  • Madison Taylor (1-0) earned her first victory of the season, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of relief. Taylor walked none and struck out two.
  • Nicole Ortega allowed three runs (two earned) in an abbreviated two-inning start.
  • Lindsey Windsor pitched a scoreless fifth inning in her first appearance in the circle since returning to the team last week. The reigning National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Player of the Year gave up a hit and a walk while striking out a batter and getting two others to ground out.
SHENANDOAH GAME NOTES
  • Allison McQueeney finished 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to pace the Hornets.
  • Brenna Westwood, Danielle McNeill, and Hannah Evans each drove in a run.
  • Meghan Gaskins (1-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) in the first inning.
GAME TWO
  • For the second straight game the Sea Gulls broke out for three runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Carrie Jacoby ripped a two-run double to right center. Lauren Meyers then reached on an error and Emily Stockman capitalized on the mistake with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
  • The Hornets got back within one run in the third inning as Savannah Thorne tagged a two-out, two-run single to right that made it 3-2.
  • The teams traded a run each in the fourth inning. Salisbury got one across on a Stockman double and Sam Flowers RBI single. Shenandoah answered with a two-out RBI knock by Sarah Medellin that got it back to 4-3.
  • Emma Coldsnow gave the Sea Gulls some breathing room in the sixth with a pinch-hit solo home run, boosting the Salisbury margin to 5-3.
  • Sydney Adolfson shut the Hornets down from there, retiring the final six batters she faced to secure the doubleheader sweep.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Carrie Jacoby finished 1-for-3 with a double, run, and two RBIs.
  • Emily Stockman went 2-for-4 with a rib-eye.

  • Sydney Adolfson (2-0) settled down the Hornet bats over the final four innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
  • Isabella Purdy surrendered two runs on seven hits over three innings in a no-decision.
