No. 1 Softball mashes Stevenson, wins 23rd straight

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University softball team grew its winning streak by two games at the expense of the Stevenson Mustangs on Wednesday afternoon at Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium. The Sea Gulls took the opener 12-0 in five innings before claiming the nightcap 9-1 for their 23rd consecutive victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
  • The Sea Gulls wasted no time racing out to a huge lead, notching seven straight hits during a six-run first inning. Emily Challender tagged a one-out single, stole second, and scored on a Meghan Reed base hit. After Natalie Paoli singled, Carrie Jacoby blasted a three-run homer to left center to put Salisbury in control at 4-0.
  • Lauren Meyers followed with her own single, then Emily Stockman banged a double off the wall in right center to put two in scoring position. Sam Flowers singled Meyers home and Jillian Dawson hit a sac fly to right to plate Stockman and make it 6-0.
  • Stockman lashed a line drive solo homer to lead off the third, then after three straight singles loaded the bases Reed brought in another with a sac fly, boosting the margin to 8-0.
  • Salisbury tacked on four more in the fourth on a Merry Pavlik two-run double, Mace run-scoring two-sacker, and Challender RBI knock to give the game its final 12-0 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Carrie Jacoby brought the big lumber, going 1-for-2 with her second homer in three games and three RBIs.
  • Emily Stockman went yard for the first time this season, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Merry Pavlik notched a pinch-hit two-run double.
  • Emily Challender went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
  • Nicole Ortega (14-1) pitched three scoreless innings for her 14th win of the year, scattering four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
  • Lindsey Windsor put up a pair of goose eggs to complete the shutout. She also singled and scored for her first hit and run of the season.
STEVENSON GAME NOTES
  • McKenzie Tobler singled twice for half of the Mustangs' four hits.
  • Ky Vaughn (5-6) pitched all four innings in the loss, allowing 12 runs on 17 hits.
GAME TWO
  • The Sea Gulls established control of the nightcap in the second inning. Ellen Stockman singled and Emily Stockman reached on an error, then Sam Flowers dropped an RBI single into right. Two batters later Abby Mace obliterated one over the left center fence for a three-run home run to make it 4-0 Salisbury.
  • Natalie Paoli tripled off the wall in center to lead off the third and scored on a wild pitch to get it to 5-0.
  • In the fourth, Sam Flowers led off with a single and ended up on third after an error in right. Mace soon after brought her in on a sac fly to make it 6-0.
  • The Mustangs got their only run in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded after two walks and a single, Ava Stafursky snuck an RBI single up the middle. Mykaela Getz scored to make it 6-1, but Mace threw out trailing runner Maddie Bosley at the plate and SU limited the damage to just one run.
  • In the home sixth, Flowers doubled and two batters later Mace crushed another home run into the trees in left field. Emily Challender followed with a ground-rule double and scored the game-ending run on an infield single by Merry Pavlik, ending the contest with a 9-1 result.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Abby Mace finished 2-for-3 with her 56th and 57th career home runs, ultimately driving in six for the game. She also notched an outfield assist at the plate from center field, her fifth of the year.
  • Sam Flowers batted 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, and three runs scored.
  • Emily Challender went 3-for-4 with a double and a run.
  • Sydney Adolfson (3-0) earned the victory with three innings of scoreless two-hit ball, walking none and fanning four.

  • The pair of wins extends the Sea Gulls' longest winning streak in 11 years. Salisbury now stands three wins shy of its 26-gamer from 2013.
