No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse snatches Senior Day win over No. 21 CNU, 18-11

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team left Sea Gull Stadium with an important victory over 21st-ranked and Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) foe Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon, picking up an 18-11 win to bring the regular season to a close.

Before Saturday's game, the team honored its eight graduating seniors: Delaney Piechowiak, Mary Hanzsche, Leah Vilov, Camryn Pepper, Elizabeth Hesen, Meridith Price, Caroline Knight, and Madeline Davis.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Captain offense found a rhythm early, with Syd Guidi and Brookelyn Morrison finding goals in the opening five minutes. Mary Hanzsche logged an unassisted tally to tighten the contest, but Kelsey Winters returned the multi-goal deficit with just over eight minutes left, 3-1.
  • Salisbury fired in three of the next four, with a delivery from Hanzsche to Alexandra Parker slicing the margin to one. After a Guidi goal, Meridith Price and Leah Vilov tossed in consecutive goals, tying the affair at 4-4 through not quite 10 minutes.
  • Maelyn Eversole and Julia Iapicca earned two more goals for CNU in the final three minutes, setting the score at 6-4 through 15 minutes.
  • The C2C rivals traded blows to begin the second stanza, with Guidi scoring the first of the period before Hanzsche picked up her third point on her second score. Vilov parried a score by CNU's Winters to start a three-goal swing, with goals from Julianna Ott and Hanzsche swinging the contest to an 8-8 deadlock at intermission.
  • Goals by Guidi and Morrison (aided by Winters) sandwiched a Hanzsche tally to preserve the lead through the first four minutes of the second half, 10-9. The dam broke with 9:26 to go in the third as Camryn Pepper kickstarted another Sea Gull run, tying the game before Audrey Harrington and Caroline Knight followed her lead to build a 12-10 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
  • Salisbury tacked on two more to begin the final quarter. Hanzsche linked with Erin Scannell before Parker tallied her second, extending the Sea Gull lead to four. Julia Iapicca pulled the deficit back to three with just over eight minutes left, 14-11.
  • The Sea Gulls closed the contest on a 4-0 run. Harrington aided Miranda Mears in a man-up situation with just under six minutes left, while Hanzsche found Price 90 seconds later and Vilov tallied her third goal 57 seconds later. Scannell placed the bow on top to cap the run and seal the 18-11 triumph.
