No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse dispatches Cabrini, 23-6, in NCAA second round

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team began its pursuit of a fifth national title with a resounding 23-6 victory over the Cabrini Cavaliers in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
 
The Sea Gulls will advance to next Saturday's regional semifinals against 15th-ranked Babson Beavers. Location and time of the matchup will be determined in the coming days.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Erin Scannell scored on a free position just over three minutes into the contest, sparking a 4-0 Sea Gull run over the first eight-plus minutes. Caroline Knight, Leah Vilov, and Camryn Pepper each put one in the back of the onion bag during the initial flurry.
  • Caroline Gallagher got a head of steam from midfield and powered one home to spark a two-goal Cavalier counter, but SU countered with six in a row to close out the period, capped by a strike from Julianna Ott to make it 10-2 after the first.
  • Knight and Mary Hanzsche netted a pair of goals in the first minute of the second quarter to get the margin to 12-2 and trigger the running clock. SU outscored Cabrini 7-1 over the rest of the period to head into halftime up 17-3.
  • The Cavaliers kept pace in the third quarter as SU edged out a 3-2 lead in the period. Pepper notched her fifth goal of the day and Kiersten Hartman and Abby Lantos each contributed a tally as the Sea Gulls took a 20-5 lead into the final session.
  • Grace Milliron found the back of the next two minutes into the fourth quarter, and the Sea Gulls tallied three against Cabrini's one in the final session to make it a 23-6 final margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Camryn Pepper led the Sea Gulls with five goals and five assists for a career-high 10 points on the day.
  • Caroline Knight scored a hat trick, while Mary Hanzsche, Alexandra Parker, and Abby Lantos scored two goals apiece.
  • Erin Scannell scored a goal and dished out two assists.
  • Knight won four draw controls, while Meridith Price and Natalie Held each notched three.
  • Julianna Ott and Leah Vilov picked up four ground balls each.
  • Madeline Davis and held caused three turnovers apiece.
  • Kaitlyn Hunsinger made a trio of saves over 30 minutes of action to move her record in goal to 14-3.
  • Gabriella Dorsey saved two shots over 24 and a half minutes in net, while Jaclyn Bange made a save during her five-and-a-half minute tenure.
  • Salisbury's 23-goal outburst is the most for the squad in a single game in over three years, with the team posting 25 goals in the second round of the 2021 dance against SUNY Morrisville.
  • Salisbury has now won at least one game in 19 of the last 20 NCAA Tournaments dating back to 2003.
CABRINI GAME NOTES
  • Olivia Little, Cassidy Starner, and Alena Catka each tallied a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers in their final game as a program.
  • Krista Geibler, Neve Murphy, and Caroline Gallagher each scored a goal.
  • Abbey Fenton recorded four saves over 50-plus in net.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will battle No. 15 Babson in the third round of the NCAA Tournament next Saturday. The Beavers outlasted No. 14 Stevens, 11-9, in their second-round tilt.
  • The teams will learn of their destination and start time in the coming days.
