SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team used a first-quarter surge and held off a fourth-quarter rally to best the 15th-ranked Babson Beavers, 15-10, in the regional semifinals of the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday morning at Sea Gull Stadium.
With the win, the Sea Gulls are one of the final eight teams standing and will advance to the regional quarterfinals to face either No. 7 Washington & Lee or No. 21 Christopher Newport on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Beavers grabbed an early first-quarter lead as Jessica Evans and Amelia Novitch netted goals within the first three minutes of action. The Sea Gulls countered with strikes from Camryn Pepper and Grace Doyle to draw even at 2-2 at the 8:17 mark.
- Pepper tucked in a free position goal less than a minute later to give SU its first lead, then Leah Vilov scooped up a rebound in front of the net and deposited her own goal, making it 4-2 Sea Gulls at the 5:55 mark and forcing a BC timeout.
- Pepper fed Caroline Knight for another tally coming out of the timeout, and Vilov's second of the period made it a 6-0 Sea Gull run and a 6-2 lead coming out of the first.
- Clare Connelly started Babson off with a goal less than 30 seconds into the second quarter, but the Sea Gulls jabbed back with a pair from Alexandra Parker and Erin Scannell in a 12-second span to make it 8-3.
- The teams boxed evenly through the rest of the second, trading three goals apiece. Kathryn Blake's man-up strike with 21 ticks to go brought the Beavers within 11-6 at halftime.
- Salisbury controlled the pace through an even third quarter, notching two goals to Babson's one. Meridith Price deposited one into the onion bag on a feed from Scannell at the 7:11 mark to make it 13-7, where it would stay through the end of the period.
- Novitch and Evans scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter for the Beavers to make it a four-goal game at 13-9 with 8:20 remaining. SU countered a minute later as Knight converted a free position opportunity to build the cushion back to 14-9.
- The teams traded one more goal apiece, with Miranda Mears delivering the final knockout to send Salisbury into the quarterfinals, 15-10.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Erin Scannell scored a hat trick and dished out an assist. She also scooped up two ground balls and caused two turnovers.
- Caroline Knight netted three goals of her own with two ground balls and two draw controls.
- Camryn Pepper notched a team-leading five points, scoring two goals with three assists along with two caused turnovers.
- Leah Vilov tallied two goals and led SU with four ground balls, plus two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
- Miranda Mears scored a pair of goals.
- Mary Hanzsche dolled out four assists.
- Abby Fleishell scooped up three ground balls, while Meridith Price added two ground balls with a team-leading three caused turnovers.
- Natalie Held reined in seven draw controls.
- Kaitlyn Hunsinger made four saves over all 60 minutes in the cage to improve to 15-3 on the year.
- Salisbury advances to the regional final for the seventh time in the past eight NCAA Tournaments dating back to 2016.
BABSON GAME NOTES
- Amelia Novitch scored a hat trick to pace the Beaver attack.
- Clare Connelly, Jessica Evans, and Kathryn Blake netted two goals apiece.
- Lily Ives scored a goal and distributed BC's only two assists.
- Abbie Downer and Eileen Manning each scooped up four ground balls.
- Murphy, Downer, Manning, and Anna Costello each caused two turnovers.
- Connelly controlled the center to the tune of 10 draw controls.
- Kathleen Murphy made five saves with a team-high five ground balls over 40-plus minutes in net, taking the loss.
UP NEXT
- The Sea Gulls will battle either No. 7 Washington & Lee or No. 21 Christopher Newport in the national quarterfinals on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
- Salisbury is 3-0 against its two potential opponents this season. SU bested W&L 14-11 at home on Feb. 25 and took down CNU in two straight games on Apr. 27 and May 4, the latter of which came in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) championship.
