Football Game Preview vs No. 18 Muhlenberg | Week 2

SALISBURY, Md. – Coming off the season-opening win against Washington & Lee 48-26, the Salisbury University football team looks to move to 2-0 as the Sea Gulls take on the No. 18 team in the land, the Muhlenberg Mules on Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff from the Sea Gull Stadium is set for 4 p.m.

The Series: This is the fifth time the Sea Gulls and Mules have faced off in football. Salisbury is 1-3 all-time against Muhlenberg and has lost the last two. The lone win came back in 2013 when the Sea Gulls took down the Mules 21-19. Muhlenberg took last year's match up 29-17 in Allentown, Pa. 

Last Time Out: The Salisbury University football program opened up the 2024 season with a 48-26 victory over Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon inside Sea Gull Stadium. The Sea Gulls (1-0) jumped out early on the Generals (0-1) 21-0 in the first quarter. The lead was extended to 28-6 at the halftime break. Washington & Lee matched the Sea Gulls scoring in the second half but could never fully get back into the ball game.

- The Salisbury offense went 7-10 on 3rd down compiling 617 total
yards which is the most in a game since 2018
- The Sea Gulls ran for 348 and passed for 269
- Clark ran for 134 with the touchdown on 13 carries while Belizaire
tallied 138 yards with two touchdowns on just four carries
- Ki'Sean Gray-Dantzler scored twice for the Sea Gulls
- Ben Malley snagged an interception while Carter Sollenberger,
Chase Lomax, and Sa'Veon Olfus all racked up eight tackles each to
lead the defense
- Olfus added two tackles for loss and a sack

The Captains: Juniors Jimmy Celentano and Micah Brubaker along with senior Ronald Clark and graduate student Tre Pricewere announced as team captains heading into week two.

All-NJAC Returners: The squad returns five All-NJAC selections in 2023. Junior Kollin Samaha is returning after earning NJAC Special Teams Player of the Year and All NJAC First Team. Team Captain Tre Price and graduate student Frankie Giannetti also earned All-NJAC First Team. Tony Mason earned All-NJAC Second Team while senior Sa'Veon Olfus earned All-NJAC Honorable Mention.

The Class of the NJAC: Since joining the NJAC in 2015, Salisbury has won 59 games in the conference. The 59 wins stand as the most wins among active teams in the conference. Since joining the NJAC in 2015, Salisbury has won five conference championships which is the most in the eight-year span.

Among the Greats: Salisbury head coach Sherman Wood ranks in the top-15 of active coaches in wins, regardless of NCAA Division. Entering 2024, Coach Wood totaled 203 victories as head coach with stints at Bowie State and SU. Wood has more career wins than other notable coaches with 20 years or more of experience than Rich Rodriguez of Jacksonville St. and Terry Bowden of Louisiana-Monroe.

Scouting Muhlenberg: After going 10-1 but missing out on a conference championship in 2023, the Muhlenberg College football team is hungry to return to the top of the standings. Two record plays lifted the Muhlenberg football team to a 33-7 season-opening win at Moravian. The Mules, ranked 21st in both Division III preseason polls, trailed 7-0 late in the first quarter but pitched a shutout the rest of the way en route to defeating the Greyhounds for the 13th straight time.

Senior Joe Repetti won the Bianco Award as Muhlenberg's MVP after throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 97 yards, narrowly missing his third career 100-yard game.
