SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team endured the elements to earn a 14-10 victory over the Catholic University of America Cardinals on a rainy evening inside Sea Gull Stadium.
The Sea Gulls (2-0) needed just 36 seconds to record the contest's first goal, taking advantage of an early Cardinal card when
Liz Haney dished an assist to
Alexandra Parker just 36 seconds into the matchup. SU forced a pair of turnovers and
Paige Ellis denied a Catholic try to send the hosts the other way, where
Miranda Mears unleashed from the eight-meter to push the lead to two through seven minutes.
The Cardinals (0-1) scored late in the opening stanza, but the maroon and gold responded with a six-goal second quarter including a 4-0 run to begin the frame.
Grace Doyle and Haney preceded a pair of
Carly Hoffman player-up strikes, pushing the lead to 6-1 with 8:23 left in the half.
Catholic managed a pair of goals before the break, but
Audrey Harrington rattled off two goals in just 47 seconds between the two visiting tallies to set the halftime score, 8-3.
SU found another fast start via Doyle's second score just 38 seconds into the second half, but Catholic responded with two goals in just over a minute to cut the lead to four. Markers from Mears, Ott and Haney sandwiched Catholic's sixth score before the guests tacked on two more to begin the fourth trailing 12-8.
The Cardinals scored two in the opening six minutes of the final quarter, but
