SALISBURY, Md. – The seventh-ranked Salisbury University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Alfred State Pioneers on a sun-splashed Monday at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, winning the opener 10-7 before bowing in the nightcap 11-10.
GAME 1
The Pioneers took advantage of a pair of SU miscues in the third inning. With men on the corners and one down, Joshua Gardner hit a popup to second that got caught in the sun and resulted in a run-scoring error. Then with runners on first and second, a bad pickoff attempt at first allowed a second ASC runner to score and make it 2-0.
The Sea Gulls countered in the fourth thanks in part to the sunshine.
BK Wilson led off with a double to center that got lost in the light, and
Andrew Kell ripped a single to center to move Wilson to third. Two batters later Wilson came home on an RBI groundout by
Dylan Winebrenner, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
ASC got the run back in the top of the fifth. After a pair of doubles put men on second and third, James Camacho singled one home to make it 3-1. The Sea Gulls escaped further danger when, with the bases loaded and one out,
Ethan Ruiz caught a pop fly deep at second base and threw out Parker Drees trying to score.
Salisbury brought the thunder in the home fifth to take the lead for the first time.
Jackson Inman led off with a double and
Trent Waire tied the game with a two-run homer to left. Then after a groundout and a walk, Wilson tattooed a line drive two-run shot to right, putting the Sea Gulls on top 5-3.
The Pioneers got one back in the sixth and then capitalized as the sun continued to wreak havoc in the seventh. With the tying run already home on a sac fly, Tyler Korsky hit a high flyball to right that was dropped, allowing two runs to score to put ASC back in front 7-5.
The Sea Gulls came roaring back with a five-spot in the eighth. With two on after an error and a single, Inman ripped a base knock up the middle to bring in a run.
Noah Burroughs then scampered home on a wild pitch to tie the game, and Waire put SU back in front with his second two-run blast of the day.
Ben Anderson made it back-to-back jacks with a pinch-hit big fly that boosted the margin to 10-7, and Salisbury put it in the books from there.
Game Notes

- Ben Bennett (1-0) tossed a scoreless eighth inning with a walk and two strikeouts, picking up his first collegiate win in relief.

- Cole Williams started the game for SU; he and Ethan Hirschfeld combined to give up seven runs (three earned) in seven innings of work.
GAME 2
BK Wilson walked to lead off the first inning for the Sea Gulls and eventually came around to score on two groundouts and a wild pitch. The Pioneers got that tally back in the top of the second on a solo homer by Jordan Hughes, but SU countered with a two-run single by
TJ Morris in the home second to go back up 3-1.
With two on and one out in the third,
Danny Sheeler chipped an RBI single into center, then after a steal and a walk
Trent Waire brought home another on a sac fly to right to make it 5-1. ASC wasted no time getting both back, though, plating two in the fourth on a solo blast by Connor Kiefer and a Zach Young sac fly to get it back to 5-3.
Salisbury answered in the bottom of the fourth as Wilson tripled with two outs and
Andrew Kell doubled him home, making it 6-3.
Ben Anderson singled home a run in the fifth, then in the seventh SU added a pair of tallies on a
Max Ehrhardt RBI double and a sac fly by Anderson to push it to 9-3.
Undeterred, the Pioneers began their comeback with three in the top of the eighth. With two out and men on the corners, Hughes walked and Devin Mersmann scored from third on a pickoff throw from the catcher that sailed into left. After a walk loaded the bases, Gavin Lasko singled home a pair to get ASC within 9-6.
SU rebuilt the cushion to four in the bottom of the eighth as
Noah Burroughs hit a sac fly with the bases loaded that made it 10-6.
In the ninth, ASC put runners everywhere on a single and two walks. Hughes came up with two outs and clubbed a bases-clearing double to left center, then Young belted a go-ahead two-run homer to left, giving the Pioneers an 11-10 lead.
The Sea Gulls had a chance to tie in the bottom of the ninth as
Dylan Winebrenner beat out a two-out pinch-hit double. Wilson came up next and hit a screaming liner to third, but Elijah Barinas was there to squeeze it and salt the game away for the Pioneers.
