Salisbury University track and field will send a pair of athletes to indoor nationals as Gavin Shaffer (60 hurdles) and Kai Smith (200 meters) are set to compete at the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

THE SHAFFER FILE

Year: Junior
Hometown: Timonium, Md.
High School: Dulaney
Shaffer, the junior from Timonium, Md., earned his NCAA qualification in the prelims at the Coast-to-Coast Championships with a time of 8.06 and then went on to take gold the next day at 8.22. Earlier in the indoor season, Shaffer earned a 2nd place finish with a time of 8.28 seconds at the Widener Winter Evening Invitational.

High School: Dr. Henry A. Wise
Smith, the junior from Upper Marlboro, Md., is fresh off a first place finish at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference meet in the 200-meter. Smith posted a time of 21.64, which set a facility record at the A&E Center. On Feb. 28th, Smith broke his own school record in the 200-meter with a time of 21.61 seconds at the FastTrack Last Chance Meet.

NATIONALS BY THE NUMBERS

Salisbury has won national championships in 18 track and field events, with Corey Beebe (400H) and Brandon Fugett (SP) taking home the first two in 2009.

Luke Campbell won 11 national championships - accounting for 61.1 percent of the Sea Gulls' haul - across his four seasons in maroon and gold from 2013-16. The future Olympian won SU's two most recent national titles, taking gold in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles at the 2016 Outdoor Championships.

Salisbury has produced 79 track and field All-Americans in program history, starting with Steve Pitt (110H) and Jeff Polk (100m, 200m) in 1975. The Sea Gull men have produced 65 All-Americans, most recently Kai Smith (outdoor 200m) in 2024. Kyleigh Dumas ('20 indoor PV) is the 15th and most recent Sea Gull woman to obtain All-America status.
