MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Taking an old adage of the ballpark's namesake to heart, the ninth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team declared "it ain't over till it's over" and rallied from a two-run ninth-inning deficit to stun the 13th-ranked Penn State Harrisburg Lions 6-5 on Friday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth with two out and nobody on,
Danny Sheeler kept the Sea Gulls alive with a two-out walk.
Dylan Winebrenner followed with his own free pass and was pinch-run for by
Mickey Haynes, then
Noah Burroughs tagged an RBI single into left to score Sheeler and make it 5-4.
After a Lions pitching change,
Andrew Kell walked to load the bases. That brought up
Jackson Inman, who ripped a base hit into center, scoring Haynes with the tying run and Burroughs with the winning tally, setting off a moment of revelry in the Garden State.
PSH got off to a hot start with three runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded and two down, Alexander Ruiz singled home two runs, then Matthew Johansen followed with his own RBI knock to make it 3-0.
The Lions tacked on another run in the third on a Johansen fielder's choice, which the Sea Gulls got back in the fourth on a Burroughs walk and Kell RBI double. PSH got the margin back to 5-1 in the fifth, with Johansen driving in his third run of the game on a two-out single.
In the sixth, SU put two runners on with one out, allowing
Trent Waire to sneak an RBI base hit through the right side. Then in the seventh, Sheeler tagged a solo homer to right, getting the Sea Gulls within 5-3 and setting up the final comeback in the ninth.
