No. 7 Women’s Lacrosse smothers No. 5 William Smith, 10-6

SALISBURY, Md. – The seventh-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team held fifth-ranked William Smith off the board for a 30-minute stretch across both halves on the way to a smothering 10-6 victory over the Herons on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

Julianna Ott put one on the board for the Sea Gulls less than two minutes into the game, then in the sixth minute Grace Doyle doubled the lead with her own tally. After the Herons answered with two straight to tie, Ott struck again on a man-up free position, and Miranda Mears followed at the 1:05 mark to rebuild the lead to 4-2 after the first quarter.

William Smith rallied for the first two of the second quarter, then after the teams traded a marker each Liz Haney powered one home at the 7:34 mark to put SU back on top 6-5. That was the last goal of the half, as the two sides dug in their heels defensively until halftime.

Haney fed Mears for a laser strike within the first two minutes of the third, then Alexandra Parker connected with Regan McDonnell for another with just over seven minutes on the clock to give SU its first three-goal lead at 8-5. Ott added one more tally in the final two minutes to make it 9-5 going into the fourth.

Ott struck again on a free position early in the fourth. The Herons finally got back on the board at the 7:55 mark, breaking up a 30-minute, 28-second drought to get within 10-6, but it was too little, too late, and the Sea Gulls parked the bus on a commanding four-goal victory.
