CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Returning east after a week in California, the 30th-ranked Salisbury University men's tennis team tore through the Washington College Shoremen, winning all nine matches in a 7-0 romp on Wednesday afternoon at the Schottland Tennis Center.
MATCH NOTES
- The Sea Gulls snagged the first point by sweeping doubles play. Asher Willenborg and Jhayden Pappas took care of first doubles 6-3, as did Gianluca Beaujon and Mitchell Desman in second doubles. Aron Bursztyn and Gurv Suri made it a perfect slate with a 7-5 triumph in third doubles.
- Beaujon (6-2, 6-4) and Nicholas O'Dea (6-2, 6-2) put SU on the cusp of the clinch by cruising through fourth and fifth singles, respectively.
- Pappas and Christopher Catan won a pair of matches near-simultaneously to clinch it for the Sea Gulls. Pappas pulled out second singles (6-3, 7-5), while Catan sweated it out in sixth singles (6-4, 7-6).
- Willenborg bounced back from a first-set hole to best Sihoo Kim in first singles (3-6, 6-2, 6-3). Suri did the same in fourth singles, recovering to give SU a clean sweep of the day (4-6, 6-1, 7-5).
The Sea Gulls will play three matches in two days at home over the weekend, starting on Saturday morning against Rutgers-Camden at 11 a.m. with a bout against 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins at 2 p.m.
