GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team scored twice in the final three minutes to force overtime but couldn't finish the job, dropping a 12-11 heartbreaker to the sixth-ranked Gettysburg Bullets on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
After falling behind 3-0 early, the Sea Gulls stole one back at the end of the first quarter as
Amelia Skinner found the back of the net. The Bullets increased their lead to 5-2 in the second before
Julianna Ott put one on the board to make it 5-3, but GC answered with a goal from Grace Battle to take a 6-3 lead into the break.
SU burst out of the gate to start the second half as
Audrey Harrington scored within the first minute of the third quarter and
Miranda Mears followed with a man-up marker in the next minute to make it a one-goal game at 6-5. The teams traded the next two tallies, then
Alexandra Parker found Mears for another man-up goal at the 3:06 mark to tie it at 7-7, where it would stay through the end of the third.
The Sea Gulls took their first lead in the first minute of the fourth as
Liz Haney tickled the twine, then two minutes later Harrington struck again to put SU up 9-7. Gettysburg came roaring back, though, and scored the next four, going up 11-9 on another strike by Battle with 3:45 to go.
Salisbury regrouped and
Carly Hoffman scored a minute later to make it 11-10, then after a timeout, Parker fed
Grace Doyle, who deposited it into the cage with 1:06 remaining in regulation to tie it at 11-11.
The Bullets won the opening draw control of overtime, then after an SU foul Julie Breedveld fed Battle for the game-winning overtime goal, dealing the Sea Gulls a 12-11 defeat.
