Men’s Basketball closes out NJCU, punches ticket to ECAC Championship

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team carved out its place in next weekend's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship game on Sunday afternoon, holding off a late push by the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on their home floor to pick up a 69-65 win.

Reed Rebstock and Aidan Camper combined to net the first five points of the contest for the Sea Gulls (18-10) before a 7-0 NJCU run gave the hosts a two-point advantage through three minutes. The sides traded scores over the next two and a half minutes before Camper and Jordan Oates scored five of seven to cut the lead to one, 15-14.

Nearly three scoreless minutes followed before an NJCU jumper ended the drought with 9:29 to go in the half. The Gothic Knights (14-13) and Sea Gulls fought to a 7-7 split before a 7-2 run put NJCU ahead by six with under five minutes remaining in the period, 29-23.

Kedrick Frink netted five points in the final minutes of the opening stanza to power a 7-3 Sea Gull stretch, yanking the game back within two points at the break, 32-30.

SU, led by Oates and Camper, crafted a 13-2 run spanning the early minutes of the second period to take a 43-34 advantage. Oates tacked on five more to help counteract eight NJCU tallies, tightening the score to 50-42 with 11 minutes to play.

The Knights answered the maroon and gold wave with a 7-0 run of their own, seesawing the matchup back within one point, but back-to-back buckets from Leon Elung and Oates helped lighten the pressure. NJCU came within three points on three occasions over the next six minutes before tying the matchup with 92 seconds remaining, 63-63.

Needing a basket to break the deadlock, Frink tipped in a miss to push SU back in front, 65-63. The Sea Gulls answered the call at the other end, earning a critical defensive stop before Oates put the cherry on top with a lay-in to secure Salisbury's place in the 2025 ECAC Championship game.
