No. 7 Baseball upended by No. 3 Johns Hopkins

SALISBURY, Md. – The seventh-ranked Salisbury University baseball team came up on the short end of a top-10 matchup with their intrastate rivals, falling to the third-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays 9-2 on Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

The Sea Gulls drew first blood in their first turn at-bat. Danny Sheeler worked a one-out walk, then Dylan Winebrenner split the gap in left center for an RBI double, putting SU ahead 1-0 after the first inning.

The Blue Jays struck back with three in the third. Jimmy Stevens led off with a double and Clay Hartje parked a two-run homer to right. After two straight singles and a fielder's choice, Shawn Steuerer skipped an RBI base hit up the middle to put JHU up 3-1.

With two out and nobody on in the fifth, JHU jumpstarted a rally a single and a 12-pitch walk. Caleb Cyr then laced a two-run double, and Dillon Souvignier belted a two-run homer to make it 7-1. The Blue Jays then added two more in the top of the sixth on a solo blast by Stevens and an RBI double by Steuerer to push it to 9-1.

SU got one back in the home sixth on a Noah Burroughs double and Trent Waire RBI single to get it back to 9-2, but that was as close as they would get as the JHU relief corps put up zeroes in each of the final three innings.
