FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 8 Salisbury University Softball program earned a sweep over Mary Washington University in Coast-to-Coast action Sunday afternoon. The Sea Gulls took game one 5-1 over the Eagles before rolling to a 10-4 win in game two.
In the game one win over the Eagles,
Sydney Adolfson allowed one earned run in her seven innings of work. Adolfson finished with six strikeouts while only allowing five hits. Mary Washington struck in the bottom of the first and held on to that lead until the fourth inning, which turned out to be their only score of the ball game.
The Sea Gull bats caught fire in the fourth inning with back-to-back solo home runs from
Emily Stockman and
Ellen Stockman.
SU carried that momentum at the plate into the fifth with
Jillian Dawson and
Emily Challender leading the inning off with back-to-back singles. Both would come around to score off RBIs from
Carrie Jacoby and Em. Stockman, giving SU a 4-1 lead in the late innings.
Jacoby would add to the lead in the seventh with a solo home run into left center field before Adolfson sat the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the game one victory.
Game One Notes
- Adolfson improves to 14-1 on the season with an ERA of 1.04. She also added two hits at the plate in game one.
- Em. Stockman also had a two-hit game along with two RBIs. Her solo home run was her 10th homer of the season.
- Jacoby finished with two RBIs and her seventh home run of the season. Jacoby leads the Sea Gulls in batting average at .514.
The SU offense powered to a game two win, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits. Mary Washington would again strike first in the bottom of the first, which also proved to be their only lead of the game. Salisbury responded with a four-run second inning.
Justyce Richard roped a one-out double into left center field to start the rally.
Karlie Wolfe earned the first RBI of the inning with a double into left field before
Morgan Moxley followed with an RBI double herself, giving the Sea Gulls the lead. Dawson reached on an error, which scored Moxley before Challender earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly, scoring Dawson.
SU was held scoreless in the third and fourth innings before scoring in each of the last three. In the fifth, Challender doubled and scored on an RBI from Jacoby. In the sixth, the Sea Gulls posted four more runs.
Richard led off with a single, which was later followed by another double for Moxley. Dawson and Challender rattled off back-to-back RBIs before
Sam Flowers and Jacoby tallied back-to-back RBI doubles.
Adolfson picked up her first RBI of the season in the seventh, scoring El. Stockman, who had doubled to lead things off. Adolfson tallied two innings of work in the circle with one hit and one strikeout, while Richard earned the win with four innings of work and two strikeouts.
Game Two Notes
- Richard moves to 8-0 on the season while holding batters to a .231 batting average on the season.
- Moxley, Richard, Jacoby, Flowers, and Challender all tallied two-hit games.
- The Sea Gulls only left three runners on base while the Eagles stranded six.
Salisbury is back on the road against York College (Pa.) on April 16
th, with game one of the double header set for 2:30 p.m.
