Game Recap: Softball | | Heath Barringer

No. 8 Softball drops opener, ties nightcap of twin bill at No. 5 VWU

Second game called due to darkness; first SU tie since 2003

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 8 Salisbury University softball program fell 5-2 in game one against No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan University before game two ended in a tie 4-4 due to darkness in the sixth inning Wednesday afternoon at Broyles Field.

The Marlins jumped out early on the Sea Gulls in game one, scoring one run in the bottom of the first before adding three in the bottom of the third. SU would trail 5-0 heading into the late innings. Emily Stockman blasted a solo shot into left centerfield in the top of the sixth to get the Sea Gulls on the board.

In the seventh, Karlie Wolfe roped a single up the middle for an RBI to score Jillian Dawson, making the score 5-2. The Sea Gulls would go on to leave the bases loaded as the comeback fell short.

Game One Notes
- Both teams tallied eight hits and left six runners on base.
- Sydney Adolfson went all six innings in her first loss of the season.
- Em. Stockman and Emily Challender tallied two hit games.
- Sam Flowers, Carrie Jacoby, Dawson, and Wolfe picked up hits for SU.

The tie in the second game marks the first tie for the program since 2003, which occurred against CNU also due to darkness. The Sea Gull offense struck first in the top of the first, scoring two runs. SU loaded the bases after Challender led off the game getting hit by a pitch, which was followed by singles from Flowers and Jacoby. Em. Stockman drove in two runs on a single, giving SU an early lead.

The Marlins notched one run in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead. They would then take the lead in the third with two runs, taking a 3-2 advantage into the fourth inning. SU would quickly tie things up after Dawson tripled and came around to score off a bunt from Challender. Once again, the Marlins would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning.

The Sea Gulls would tie it up again in the fifth after Jacoby doubled to lead things off and came around to score after the Marlins caught Ellen Stockman trying to steal second. Justyce Richard was able to work out of a jam in the bottom of the inning with runners on second and third to secure the tie for SU.

Game Two Notes
- SU tallied eight hits but left five on base.
- Richard only allowed two earned runs in her five innings of work.
- Em. Stockman posted another two-hit game along with two RBIs
