WINCHESTER, Va. – The sixth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team earned its fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday evening, enduring a late push from the Shenandoah University Hornets to earn a 13-11 victory in Winchester, Va.
Julianna Ott powered the Sea Gulls (9-3) in the opening quarter, tying her career-high with four goals across the opening 15 minutes. The junior midfielder gave the maroon and gold the first lead less than three minutes into the afternoon before the Hornets (8-5, 4-1 ODAC) fired two quick responses, but Ott parried with three more strikes interrupted only by a
Regan McDonnell tally to build a 5-2 SU edge through 15 minutes.
Grace Doyle and
Carly Hoffman extended the SU run to six straight to widen the margin to five at the second stanza's 7:15 mark before the Hornets landed a pair of stings to cut the margin to three.
Audrey Harrington connected with
Miranda Mears for the half's final goal, establishing an 8-4 Sea Gull lead at the break.
Again, the Hornets attacked in twos, tacking on the fifth and sixth goals of the contest in just over two minutes to cut the margin to two at the third quarter's outset.
Alexandra Parker preceded Ott's career-best fifth score and
Liz Haney followed suit, opening up a five-goal Sea Gull edge with 7:28 left in the period.
The Hornets sandwiched Doyle's second net rustle of the contest with two more tallies, sending the battle of SU's into the fourth quarter with a 12-8 line.
Avery Dunbar joined the scoring in the fourth to interrupt a three-goal period for the Hornets, but
Natalie Held forced a critical late takeaway to give the Sea Gulls possession late and help guide the game to a 13-11 final.
GAME NOTES
- Julianna Ott was stellar for the Sea Gulls, netting a career-high five goals in the win and putting all six of her shots on target while snagging three draw controls, scooping two ground balls and causing a pair of turnovers.
- Grace Doyle netted her seventh multi-goal effort of the campaign, firing a pair of goals while securing a team-high four draw controls in the win.
- Carly Hoffman stuffed the stat sheet for SU, matching the team-high with two caused turnovers while digging out two grounders and scoring a goal in the win.
- Abby Fleishell chased down two ground balls and caused two Hornet miscues while Natalie Held forced two Hornet turnovers and added one ground ball.
- Paige Ellis (9-3) earned the win between the pipes, making six saves across the full 60 minutes.
- Eight different Sea Gulls scored in the victory.
- The Sea Gulls outshot the Hornets 26-24, finished 20-of-21 on clears and won the ground ball battle 14-10.
The Sea Gulls return home on Saturday, hosting 12th-ranked TCNJ to open a two-game homestand. The ranked rumble is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Sea Gull Stadium.
