SALISBURY, Md. – The 29th-ranked Salisbury University men's tennis team drew the short end of a tightly-contested matchup against the 57th-ranked UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, falling 4-3 in the final dual match of the season on Thursday afternoon at the SU Outdoor Tennis Center.
MATCH NOTES
- The Sea Gulls took the doubles point behind victories by Gianluca Beaujon and Mitchell Desman (6-1) in second doubles and Aron Bursztyn and Gurv Suri (6-2) in third doubles.
- Asher Willenborg won his 18th singles match of the year, besting Andrew Tjoa (6-1, 7-5) in first singles.
- Suri won both of his matches of the day, taking third singles in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) against Benjamin Wang.
- The Banana Slugs swept fourth singles and pulled a trio of matches out of the fire in three sets, as Jhayden Pappas, Beaujon, and Desman fell in heartbreakers in second, fifth, and sixth singles, respectively.
The Sea Gulls now turn their attention to the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament, which begins on Saturday in Newport News, Va. Third-seeded Salisbury will battle second-seeded Christopher Newport in a semifinal matchup at 2 p.m.
