SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team secured its eighth consecutive and 27th overall conference championship on Sunday afternoon when
Michael Leahy sent the fourth-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport home 40 seconds into overtime, securing the 13-12 victory and the Coastal Lacrosse Conference's (CLC) first automatic qualifier to the Big Dance.
After nearly nine scoreless minutes to start the game,
Connor Herraiz got the Sea Gulls (19-0, 5-0 CLC) on the board to ignite a three-goal swing.
Charles Fritchman nabbed a one-time ground ball and darted downfield for SU's second strike before
Ty Keaton found
Brice Bromwell to establish the 3-0 lead with 4:28 left in the opening frame.
The Captains (16-3, 4-1 CLC) netted their first goal not quite two minutes later before
Trent Lucovich and
Riley Strub joined forces to extend the lead to four through 15 minutes, 5-1.
Ryan Della posted a brace in the second quarter, but the Captains surrounded them with four tallies to cut the margin to two at the break, 7-5.
CNU netted the second half's first goal before
Jeremiah Stafford set up
Bryce Stevenson's fourth goal of the season and his career to keep the margin at two. The Captains parried with a 5-1 run interrupted only by Della's third net rustle to lead with under 13 minutes to play, 11-9.
After a six-minute struggle, the Sea Gulls found the rally they needed. Strub netted his second score before
John DeFazio found
Michael Leahy in transition to tie the bout at 11, with Bromwell vaulting the Sea Gulls in front with 2:13 to play in regulation. The Captains nabbed their 12th goal with 97 seconds left to force the added period.
A quick
Blake Malamphy faceoff win helped Keaton find Leahy on the doorstep in the early seconds of overtime and the freshman delivered, dropping a changeup in the five-hole to complete the late comeback and secure the CLC hardware.
