UNION, N.J. – The Salisbury University volleyball team sledgehammered its way to a pair of convincing sweeps on the first day of the Kean Invitational, grounding the Alfred Saxons 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-15) and Drew Rangers 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-15) on Friday night at Harwood Arena.
MATCH ONE
Up 4-3 early in the first set, the Sea Gulls locked in to the tune of a 12-1 run, using a block from
Kiley McTaggart and
Sophia Tapia to boost the lead to 16-4. The Saxons never got closer than eight the rest of the way, and SU put it to bed with three in a row on a
Maura Fay kill,
Jasmine Nelson service ace, and Tapia kill to clinch it 25-13.
Salisbury kept the foot on the gas in the second set, stringing together four streaks of at least three points, including a six-pointer to balloon an 11-5 margin to 17-5.
Julie Altieri eventually served up
Amanda Meschi for the kill to ice the frame, 25-16.
Annabelle Weis opened the third set with back-to-back aces, and while the Saxons soon regrouped and inched ahead 6-5, Fay landed a kill to set off a 10-1 surge that put SU in control 15-7. Alfred got back within five points but no closer, and the Altieri-to-Tapia connection put produced the match-clinching kill, 25-15.
Game Notes
- Maura Fay led a balanced Sea Gull attack with nine kills to go along with four digs.
- Gwen Eustace landed seven kills against one error, good for a .750 hitting percentage.
- Sophia Tapia hit .667, producing six kills against no errors. Tapia also notched four blocks (two solo).
- Kiley McTaggart and Amanda Meschi chipped in three kills apiece.
- Julie Altieri served up 18 assists and tied a team high with three service aces.
- Prudence Marco chased down 14 digs.
- Annabelle Weis notched eight digs and landed three aces.
- Salisbury hit .304 as a team, starting off on a wicked .476 clip in the first set.
- SU outblocked the Saxons 7-1 and won the ace battle 12-7.
MATCH TWO
The Sea Gulls burst out of the starting gate with 10 of the first 12 points and never looked back, building the margin as high as 22-8 after a solo block from
Sophia Tapia. The Rangers made it respectable from there with six in a row, but SU netted three of the last four, locking down the opening frame 25-15 on a kill from
Jackie Colucci.
Drew regrouped and opened up a 9-4 lead to begin the second set, but a
Gwen Eustace kill set up a 12-2 string, and a stuff from Tapia and
Maura Fay established a 16-11 Salisbury cushion. Up 18-14 later,
Kiley McTaggart brought the hammer down to spark a 7-2 flourish to wrap up the set at 25-16.
Tied 3-3 in the opening moments of set three, the Sea Gulls went on a 7-0 run to make it 10-3. The Rangers eventually clawed their way back to 15-12, but Salisbury kept its foe at an arm's length the rest of the way. Colucci's late kill set up the last four in a row for SU, and Colucci and Eustace put up a picket fence to put it on ice, 25-15.
Game Notes
- Kiley McTaggart led all attackers with 10 kills, plus a pair of service aces.
- Gwen Eustace continued her ultra-efficient start to the year, blasting nine kills with no errors for a .818 clip. Eustace currently leads Division III with a .516 swing rate through 12 matches this season.
- Maura Fay landed seven kills, while Jackie Colucci added six.
- Sophia Tapia went up for four kills and a team-leading six blocks (two solo).
- Julie Altieri clocked in with her 40th career double-double and eighth this season with 29 assists and 14 digs. She also registered six kills and three aces.
- Altieri moved into fifth on the Salisbury all-time assists leaderboard, surpassing Jen Bowman '96 (2,121) and finishing the night with 2,132 career helpers.
- Annabelle Weis paced the backline with 10 digs.
- Sophia Blaufuss entered the match in the third set for her first game action since Sept. 14, 2024, posting one dig.
- The Sea Gulls hit .319 as a team, including an otherworldly .571 in the decisive third set.
- SU won the aces battle 9-2 and the blocking battle 7-2.
The Sea Gulls will play their third and fourth matches in a 24-hour span on day two of the Kean Invitational on Saturday. SU will battle hosts Kean at 11 a.m., followed by a matchup with Hunter at 1 p.m.
