WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's golf team is heading home with two times the hardware from the Melee, hosted by Premier Collegiate Tournaments, whose second and final round was held on Monday at Williamsburg National Golf Club.
Krista Brosius reigned supreme atop the individual leaderboard, while the Sea Gulls as a team bested the field by 16 strokes. SU carded a 47-over 335 for the round, 20 strokes better than its official total from round one, for an aggregate 114-over 690. Drew (706) finished second as a team, while Shenandoah (708) took third; Averett also sent an individual golfer to compete.
ROUND NOTES
- Krista Brosius entered the day four strokes back of the lead and held steady as her competition folded, shooting a six-over 78 to improve on her first round by one stroke. Brosius, who started on the 14th hole in the shotgun format, shot a pair of birdies on 16 and 11 and put the title on ice with a par on 13.
- Brosius's 13-over 157 for the week put her six strokes clear of Averett's Meredith Pegram and the rest of the field of 16 individuals. It marks her second career individual tournament championship, following the Sea Gull Invitational last April.
- Stella Jaffe also posted steady round-to-round marks, improving by one stroke with a 10-over 82. She finished third in the solo standings with a 21-over 165.
- Sydney Lynott climbed two slots into fourth place, shaving five strokes off her Monday total with a 10-over 82 to finish at 25-over 169.
- Ava Kelly shot a 21-over 93 for round two. Due to a scorecard discrepancy at the end of Monday's competition, she was disqualified from round one and her 88 was wiped from the board; officially she did not place individually.
- Caroline Fitzgerald improved by seven strokes from Monday to Tuesday, carding a 27-over 99 in round two to place her 15th overall at a 61-over 205.
The Sea Gulls will look to parlay their team momentum into conference glory next week at the second annual Colonial Women's Golf Conference (CWGC) Championship. The two-day, seven-team tournament will be held from Oct. 26-27 at Running Deer Golf Club in Pittsgrove, N.J.
