Women’s Soccer grounds St. Mary’s (Md.) in midweek matchup

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team picked up a victory by taking down in-state rival St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday evening, 2-1, at the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex.

After the Seahawks (6-8-3) garnered the first two shots of the game, the Sea Gulls (4-10-1) posted the next three, with the final resulting in the opening tally of the contest as Brooke Spadin placed a pass behind the defense that Skylar Williams deposited into the back of the net during the 13th minute.

St. Mary's tested Aley Martins twice in the early going, to which the SU keeper made a pair of stops; however, the Seahawks would knot the score in the 28th minute courtesy of a right-footed shot from Alexandra Sarrach. The Maroon and Gold went into the breather with an 11-4 shot advantage with five attempts going on frame.

The Sea Gulls held a firm grip of pace in the second stanza, outshooting SMC 6-2, with a pair of shots from Bailey Knotts that nearly broke the deadlock. SU found the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute when Sophia Pierce linked up with Lillian Hutchings for a try that was saved, but cleaned up by Callie Chesney from inside the six-yard box.

Salisbury would not allow a shot after taking the lead to secure a one-goal win.

GAME NOTES The Sea Gulls take on Johnson and Wales Charlotte on Saturday at 1 p.m. inside the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex. The program will hold senior day for nine senior members of the team prior to the game.
