SCRANTON, Pa. – An unanswered 13 goal first segment propelled the second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team to a 20-3 victory over the Scranton University Royals in Saturday afternoon's contest at Weiss Field.
The Sea Gulls (3-0) spread the wealth equally in the first frame, getting scores from
Riley Strub,
Chris Wong,
Tristan Plotts,
Brady Mancha,
Blake Malamphy,
Preston Huffman and
Michael DeSano.
Connor Herraiz dished out three assists throughout the first fifteen minutes of play to help give the visitors a 7-0 advantage.
The Maroon and Gold added another six goals on top of their lead in the following stanza. Strub, Wong, Plotts and Malamphy added tallies while Herraiz and
Ryan Della joined the scoring party to make it 13-0 heading into the break.
The Sea Gulls conceded just over a minute into the third quarter to end the shutout but managed to outpace the Royals (0-1) 3-1 in the period. Della connected twice with his second tally coming man-up from a Herraiz feed, then Herraiz found twine unassisted with just a minute remaining in the session to make it 16-1.
The Gulls won the fourth quarter 4-2.
Luke Hicks found pay dirt twice, while
Bret Bergey and
Benjamin McDonnell helped get Salisbury to the 20-goal mark for the second straight game.
GAME NOTES
- The Sea Gulls pitched its first shutout in the first half since March 27, 2024 when they led 12-0 over Catholic at halftime.
- Herraiz compiled two goals and six assists to follow a nine-point outing last week.
- Della made his return to the lineup and scored three goals and added in a helper.
- Strub, Wong, Plotts, Malamphy and Hicks each netted a pair of goals.
- DeSano and McDonnell each earned their first career goals with SU.
- Cooper Keesee claimed three ground balls and caused a team-high two turnovers.
- Malamphy went 13-18 at the dot and picked up ten ground balls. Charles Fritchman went 4-7 and Ryan Lazzara went 1-1 in relief.
- Matt Sentowski earned the win and made three saves. Alex Swartz and Jack Wallace each made a stop in the fourth quarter.
- The Sea Gulls outshot the Royals 52-31, finished 18-of-19 on clear attempts, won the ground ball battle 50-31 and went 4-of-8 on extra man opportunities
The Sea Gulls play its first game at home next Saturday, welcoming No. 9 Gettysburg to Sea Gull at 1 p.m.
