SALISBURY, Md. – Down 8-3 in the ninth inning, the second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team scored four runs but couldn't push the tying marker across the plate in a narrow 8-7 loss to the Messiah Falcons on Tuesday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.
The Sea Gulls put a run across early as
Nathan Tondreault led off the first inning with a double and scored on a
Jackson Inman RBI single. The Falcons countered in the third, loading the bases with one out and seeing the tying run come home on a base knock by Drew Hurst.
In the fourth, Messiah put men on the corners with one out, setting up Matt Luchovik to tag a three-run homer to right and give the Falcons a 4-1 cushion. Then in the seventh Isaiah Parido led off with a solo shot to right center, and with men on second and third later in the frame Carter Reid dunked a run-scoring knock into right to make it 6-1.
Mike Delgaudio provided SU a spark in the home seventh with a solo dinger to get it to 6-2. Then in the eighth after the Falcons tacked on two more, Tondreault tripled and
Ethan Ruiz singled him home to keep the Sea Gulls in it, 8-3.
Max Ehrhardt singled to lead off the ninth, then after a fielder's choice and
Charlie Hartman knock,
Jay Newton belted a pinch-hit ground-rule double to plate a run. Tondreault followed with his own two-sacker to chase home two more and get it to 8-6, and a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases to put the tying and winning runs on base. Delgaudio worked a walk to force in a run, bringing up
Dawson Daniels, who hit a sharp grounder to third. Hurst saved the day for Messiah, though, smothering the hot shot, touching third, and firing across the diamond for the game-ending double play.
