Softball earns Sunday sweep in Margie Knight Classic final day

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University softball program earned a sweep/split on the final day of the Margie Knight Classic at the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex. The Sea Gulls took down Carnegie Mellon University in game one, 7-6, in walk-off fashion, before outlasting SUNY New Paltz 6-4.

In game one against Carnegie Mellon, the Tartans struck first in the top of the first, earning an early 1-0 lead. They went on to add another run in the second inning as well, before the Sea Gulls responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Alayna Gigliotti led the inning off with a single through the right side and would come around to score off a Tartan throwing error. The Sea Gulls trailed 2-1 through two innings. CMU once again tallied one more run in the top of the third, keeping their scoring streak in each inning alive.

They went on to add three more in the fourth, as the Sea Gulls headed to the bottom of the inning trailing 6-1. The SU offense woke up in the fourth, responding with two runs to cut the lead in half. Karlie Wolfe and Lexie Delcollo picked up hits in the inning, while Audrey March and Lacie Donovan earned RBIs.

After cutting into the lead, Isabella Purdy, who came in relief, handed the Tartans their first shutout inning of the game. The Sea Gulls headed to the bottom of the fifth trailing 6-3. The teams were held scoreless through the fifth inning before SU posted one run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Tartans led 6-4 going into the final frame. SU put the rally caps on and tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk the game off and earn the victory. Gigliotti earned a two RBI single to tie the game before Morgan Moxley singled to right field to earn the walk-off RBI.

Game One Notes
  • Purdy finished with just over three innings of work with her win in the circle, allowing no earned runs and only four hits.
  • Gigliotti finished with a two-hit game along with two RBIs.
  • The Tartans out-hit the Sea Gulls 13-6, but made three errors when SU tallied zero.
In game two against SUNY New Paltz, the teams went scoreless through the first inning before the Sea Gulls got on the board in the top of the second. March led off the inning with a triple and was knocked in by an RBI single from Delcollo. The Hawks plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

The Sea Gulls responded quickly in the third with Gigliotti earning an RBI single that scored Sam Flowers, who walked to lead the inning off. Flowers would go on to earn an RBI double in the fourth to give SU the lead on a two-out hit.

The Hawks tied things up in the bottom of the inning as the game headed into the fifth tied 3-3. A solo shot in the bottom of the fifth for New Paltz lifted them ahead 4-3 heading into the sixth.

SU once again responded with three runs to regain the lead. Savannah Reedy led off the inning with a single and would come around to score and tie the game with an RBI double from Courtney Johnson before Wolfe drove in Johnson with an RBI double to give the Sea Gulls the lead. Gigliotti continued her stellar day with an RBI double to extend the lead.

Salisbury led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Purdy shut the door late on the Hawks, earning her second win of the day from inside the circle, this time in complete game fashion.

Game Two Notes
  • March and Gigliotti both tallied two-hit games. Gigliotti finished the day with four hits and four RBIs.
  • The Sea Gulls out-hit the Hawks 9-7, while Salisbury posted two errors.
  • Both teams stranded nine runners on base throughout the course of the ballgame.
The Sea Gulls are back at Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium on Saturday, March 21st, when they battle Manhattanville University for a doubleheader starting at noon.
