SALISBURY, Md. – Pitching ruled the day for the fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team, who swept a twin bill against the Haverford Fords on Saturday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, taking the opener 4-2 and ruling the nightcap 2-1.
GAME ONE
The two sides traded one tally each in the second inning. The Fords struck first on a hit batsman and Mauro DeCillis RBI double. The Sea Gulls countered with back-to-back two-sackers by
Conner Seeley and
Trent Waire to draw even.
Waire doubled to lead off the fifth and set up SU's breakthrough. After
Henry Carbone beat out an infield hit,
Mickey Haynes laid down a bunt to bring Waire home with the go-ahead run.
Ethan Ruiz followed with his own bunt single, and
Nathan Tondreault punched an RBI knock into right to score Carbone. Following a pickoff and a single to load them up again,
Jackson Inman legged out a run-scoring fielder's choice to make it 4-1.
The Fords' best chance to tie came in the eighth when they loaded the bases with no out, but Luke Treese's sac fly was all they could cash in against the Sea Gull bullpen.
Bryce Sterling came in to close out the ninth and shut HC down 1-2-3 to lock it down.
Game Notes
- Trent Waire finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, one run, and one RBI.
- Conner Seeley doubled and scored as part of a 1-for-4 day.
- Mickey Haynes batted 1-for-2 with a steal and a rib-eye in his first career start at catcher.
- Tyler Villa (3-1) struck out a career-high nine batters over seven-plus innings, scattering two runs on three hits and three walks over 118 pitches.
- Bryce Sterling secured his fifth save of the year with a perfect ninth. With 11 career saves, he is now tied with Cory Willey '03 for second-most in Salisbury history.
- Cole Williams provided the bridge from Villa to Sterling with a standout eighth, inheriting the bases loaded with no out and allowing only one of those runners to score.
GAME TWO
The Sea Gulls broke the ice in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by
Jackson Inman and
Jay Newton. Then in the third,
Ethan Ruiz led off with a single, advanced to third on a base hit by
Max Ehrhardt, and scored on an Inman sac fly to deep center to double the lead at 2-0.
In the eighth the Fords finally broke up the shutout as Jackson Sgro doubled and eventually came home on a Ryan Field RBI groundout, cutting the deficit to 2-1. That was as close as they would get, though, as
Bryce Sterling shut it down in the ninth for the second time on the day to put the sweep on ice.
Game Notes
- Jackson Inman and Jay Newton each finished with a double and an RBI to spearhead the Sea Gull attack.
- Inman and Ethan Ruiz scored the two SU runs for the game.
- Jack Rucker (2-0) made it through five scoreless innings for his first win since Opening Day. Rucker scattered one hit and five walks while striking out four on 100 pitches.
- Bryce Sterling picked up his second save of the double dip with another perfect ninth. It marks the second time this season (Mar. 7 vs. N.C. Wesleyan) that Sterling has saved both ends of a doubleheader.
- With his sixth save of the year Sterling ties himself for fourth-most in single-season SU history; with 12 career saves he now owns sole possession of second place on the SU leaderboard. Only Kyle Hamby '15, who recorded 15 career saves, stands in Sterling's way of the program record.
- Tyler Katz, Garrett Beaver, and Cole Williams teamed up for three innings as one-run ball to bridge Rucker and Sterling.
The Sea Gulls will turn around and host one against Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday, with first pitch from Donnie Williams Stadium set for 3:30 p.m.
