CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Salisbury University softball program earned a midweek sweep over Washington College (Md.) Wednesday afternoon, taking game one 16-0 in five innings and securing a 13-6 win in game two.
The Sea Gulls (12-8) used an offensive onslaught in game one to soar past the Shorewomen (5-15), 16-0 in run-rule fashion. Salisbury tallied one run in the first, six in the second, seven in the fourth, and two in the fifth to cruise to victory.
Courtney Johnson racked up two RBIs on a double in the second, while
Karlie Wolfe earned two RBIs on a two-run home run. The Sea Gulls led by a touchdown after three innings of action.
In the seven-run fourth inning,
Audrey March tallied a two RBI double, which was followed by another two RBI double from
Merry Pavlik.
Erin Doherty capped off the inning with a three-run home run into centerfield.
Three Sea Gulls combined for the shutout in the circle.
Carly Angstadt, Madison McGinnis, and
Hannah Derbyshire all posted innings, while only allowing three hits and combining for eight strikeouts. Angstadt posted five Ks in just over two innings of work.
Game One Notes
- McGinnis tallied two strikeouts and was credited with the victory. Derbyshire struck out one batter in one inning of work with no hits allowed.
- Sam Flowers scored three runs on two drawn walks.
- Johnson and Doherty both posted three RBI games.
- Pavlik and Camille Jones both tallied two-hit games, while Pavlik added two RBIs and Jones had one.
- McKenna Horner, Michalea Troy, Emma Robinson, and Morgan Moxley all added a hit each.
- SU tallied 12 hits and only stranded four runners on base.
The offensive explosion continued in game two, with a 13-6 win over the Shorewomen for the Sea Gulls. SU tallied two in the first, one in the third, three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and six in the seventh. Washington (Md.) scored a run to stay within striking distance in each of the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings.
The scoring started in the first with a walk from Flowers, who stole second and was driven in by Johnson. Wolfe earned the second RBI of the inning, scoring Johnson. Johnson would go on to lead the third inning off with a solo homerun.
The three-run fifth inning started with back-to-back bunt singles from Jones and Flowers. Johnson would then move them over with a sacrifice bunt. Wolfe,
Alayna Gigliotti, and March earned RBIs in the inning.
The SU rally in the seventh started off with a triple from
Madison Lepeonka, who was driven in by Pavlik. Salisbury went on to score six runs in the inning, all with two outs.
Game Two Notes
- Isabella Purdy earned the win in the circle for the Sea Gulls, going just over four innings and allowing just three earned runs with two strikeouts.
- Johnson continued her stellar day with a four-hit game and three RBIs.
- Flowers, Wolfe, and Jones all tallied three-hit games. Flowers and Jones had two RBIs while Wolfe posted three.
- Salisbury posted 17 hits and left six runners on base, while Washington (Md.) tallied 12 hits and stranded 13 runners.
Salisbury is back on the road against Stockton University on April 3rd with game one of the double header starting at 2:30 p.m. from Galloway, N.J.
