SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team slugged its way through a gritty round of doubles and used its depth in singles play to topple the Methodist Monarchs, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the SU Outdoor Tennis Center.
MATCH NOTES
- Doubles play was decided by a razor-thin margin, with all three fixtures going into a tiebreaker. The Monarchs took first doubles while Nicholas O'Dea and Bobby Stabile secured second doubles for SU, 7-6 (7-2). Then in third doubles, Maas Jacobs and Chase Catullo ousted their foes by a 7-6 (7-5) score, winning the first point for the Sea Gulls.
- Catullo and Jacobs secured the first pair of singles points for SU. In sixth singles, Catullo triumphed by a 7-5, 6-1 margin, while Jacobs picked up a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 dub in third singles.
- Stabile clinched the match for the Sea Gulls from fourth singles, outlasting the Monarchs' Decklan Rayner 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
- Aron Bursztyn made it four singles points for SU after taking down Billy Johnson 7-6 (10-8), 1-6, 7-6 (7-1) in a marathon fourth singles tilt.
The Sea Gulls will turn around and play their second of three matches in three days on Saturday against Averett, with first serve from the SU Tennis Center slated for 10 a.m.
